Continuous worsening of population emotional stress globally: universality and variations.

BMC Public Health

December 2024

Urban Institute & Department of Civil Engineering, Kyushu University, 744 Motooka Nishi-Ku, Fukuoka, 819-0395, Japan.

Background: Understanding emotional stress stability in populations is crucial because stress is a key factor in causing depression, and it worsens well-being.

Method: In this study, using repeated cross-sectional data from 149 countries from 2007 to 2021 (N = 2,450,043), we examined time trends of psychological stress in populations worldwide.

Results: Over half of the population experienced emotional stress in 20 countries, and 85% of the countries reported worse psychological stress in 2020 compared with 2008.

Excisional surgery versus ablative surgery for ovarian endometrioma.

Cochrane Database Syst Rev

November 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand.

Background: Endometrioma are endometriotic deposits within the ovary. Laparoscopic management of endometriomas is associated with shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, and decreased hospital costs compared with laparotomy. The previous version of this systematic review (2008), including randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of surgical interventions for endometrioma, concluded that laparoscopic cystectomy (excision) was preferable to drainage and ablation of endometrioma.

Background: About 80% of children with steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS) have relapses. Of these children, half will relapse frequently, and are at risk of adverse effects from corticosteroids. While non-corticosteroid immunosuppressive medications prolong periods of remission, they have significant potential adverse effects.

Background: Kidney transplantation is the optimal treatment for kidney failure. Donation, transport and transplant of kidney grafts leads to significant ischaemia reperfusion injury. Static cold storage (SCS), whereby the kidney is stored on ice after removal from the donor until the time of implantation, represents the simplest preservation method.

Article Synopsis
  • This update reviews the use of antiviral medications to prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections in solid organ transplant recipients, building on findings from previous reviews in 2005, 2008, and 2013.
  • The objective is to evaluate the benefits and potential harms of these medications, specifically their effect on preventing CMV disease and all-cause mortality.
  • The analysis of 41 studies with over 5,000 participants found new insights into the effectiveness of antiviral prophylaxis, aiming to summarize results using risk ratios and mean differences.
