Deformable registration aims to achieve nonlinear alignment of image space by estimating a dense displacement field. It is commonly used as a preprocessing step in clinical and image analysis applications, such as surgical planning, diagnostic assistance, and surgical navigation. We aim to overcome these challenges: Deep learning-based registration methods often struggle with complex displacements and lack effective interaction between global and local feature information.

Soft actuators are limited by single-mode driving technology, which poses challenges in dealing with complex and multidimensional movements. In this study, a multiresponsive soft actuator was fabricated by integrating a microwrinkling structure into an MXene-based film, enabling programmable motions. To achieve this, we introduced -hexane into the film preparation process and utilized its rapid volatilization to accelerate the shrinkage difference between the film and the substrate.

Untethered bistable origami crawler for confined applications.

Magnetically actuated miniature origami crawlers are capable of robust locomotion in confined environments but are limited to passive functionalities. Here, we propose a bistable origami crawler that can shape-morph to access two separate regimes of folding degrees of freedom that are separated by an energy barrier. Using the modified bistable V-fold origami crease pattern as the fundamental unit of the crawler, we incorporated internal permanent magnets to enable untethered shape-morphing.

Article Synopsis
  • A new soft crawling robot (OVFSCR) inspired by origami design has been developed, featuring foldable mirrored actuators that allow for movements like crawling, climbing, and turning.
  • The robot's unique structure, with low front and high rear feet, creates friction differences to enable efficient forward motion by coordinating body deformation with its foot placements.
  • OVFSCR demonstrates multifunctionality, achieving an average crawling speed of 11.9 mm/s, navigating slopes and obstacles, and mimicking the movement of soft worms, which has potential applications in adaptive navigation and exploration.

Department of Vitreo Retinal Services, Medical Research Foundation, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the long-term outcomes of lens-sparing vitrectomy (LSV) in 23 eyes of patients with stage 4 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) after an average follow-up of over 7 years.
  • Results show that 69.57% of lenses remained clear, 82.61% of eyes had an attached retina, and 34.78% achieved good vision (≥6/24).
  • While some patients experienced severe myopia, the majority retained functional vision, with 68.75% showing visual capability in at least one eye despite complications like retinal detachments.
