Risk factors for venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy as treatment for ovarian cancer.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

December 2024

Department of Gynaecological Oncology, West Kent Cancer Centre, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, Hermitage Lane, Maidstone, Kent ME16 9QQ, United Kingdom.

Objective: During the treatment of ovarian cancer, the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) post operatively is well established, however, patients may be at even greater risk during neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). This study aimed to determine the incidence and timing of VTE amongst patients undergoing NACT, whether there was an association with survival, and examine risk factors associated with the development of VTE.

Study Design: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients diagnosed with ovarian, fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancer receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy betweenApril 2011 and April 2022 at a gynaecological cancer centre in England.

With improved surgical outcomes for non-ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), the primary objective has shifted toward the detection of asymptomatic AAA. Since ultrasonographic visualization from the anterior abdominal wall is often obstructed by intestinal gas, utilizing additional bilateral posterior approaches via the retroperitoneal tissue may be beneficial. This study investigates the feasibility of assessment using three approaches through computed tomography (CT) data analyses.

These tumors are typically large at presentation due to their slow growth and the nonspecific nature of symptoms, which often leads to delayed diagnosis. A 40-year-old male presented with intermittent abdominal pain and a palpable lump in the right paraumbilical region.

Purpose Of Review: Chemotherapy offers excellent long-term survival rates for men with clinical stage II germ cell tumours. However, in this predominantly younger population, chemotherapy is associated with long-term adverse effects. Primary retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) may serve as an alternative treatment option, preserving oncological safety while potentially reducing adverse effects in men with limited retroperitoneal disease.
