The respiratory and agar-gel precipitin response of chickens to H120 and H 52 vaccines of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) were studied. On aerosol exposure of 3-weeks-old chicks to H120, slight respiratory symptoms were observed in 30% while 70% produced precipitins. Eleven-weeks-old chicks inoculated intratracheally with H52 alone showed severe symptoms and 100% produced precipitins. Similar birds previously vaccinated with H120 showed no symptoms on challenge with H52 but 55% produced precipitins. Although this may preclude the use of the test in some outbreaks of IB, it could be applied, at appropriate times, to replacement laying stock and perhaps in the investigation of the "egg-drop syndrome".

In the United States, 19 allergen extracts of different specificities are standardized, which means that their potencies are determined in comparison to a US reference standard. For cat allergen extracts, potency is determined by measuring Fel d 1 content expressed in in Fel d 1 units, and with a unitage that correlates with skin test reactions (bioequivalent allergy units or BAU). Currently, Fel d 1 content is measured with a radial immunodiffusion (RID) assay that uses polyclonal sheep antisera to detect the allergenic protein by producing a white precipitin line in agar gel.

Context: Bird fancier's lung (BFL) is the most prevalent form of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) worldwide. The current techniques used for the serological diagnosis of BFL all use crude extracts from feathers, droppings, and blooms as test antigens, which is associated with a lack of standardization and variability of the results. An antigenic protein, immunoglobulin lambda-like polypeptide-1 (IgLL1), isolated from pigeon droppings, was recently identified to be associated with BFL.
