Published: November 2008

Ten sesquiterpenens were isolated from Inula helenium. Among them, three eudesmanolides: 15-hydroxy-11betaH-eudesm-4-en-8beta,12-olide (1), 3alpha-hydroxy-11betaH-eudesm-5-en-8beta,12-olide (2) and 2beta, 11alpha-dihydroxy-eudesm-5-en-8beta,12-olide (3) are new compounds. Their chemical structures were determined by spectral methods including 2D NMR.

Article Synopsis
  • Alantolactone, a type of sesquiterpene lactone, inhibits TNF receptor 1 (TNF-R1) expression in human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells, independent of three adaptor proteins.
  • The down-regulation of TNF-R1 by alantolactone is influenced by its ability to promote the shedding of the receptor's ectodomain and is blocked by a TNF-α-converting enzyme inhibitor.
  • Additionally, the study highlights that the α-methylene-γ-lactone moiety is essential for the ectodomain shedding of TNF-R1 and is also observed in other similar compounds like parthenolide and costunolide.

Glucose Uptake-Stimulating Metabolites from Aerial Parts of .

J Nat Prod

April 2024

Department of Pharmacy, School of Medicine and Surgery, University of Naples Federico II, Via Montesano 49, 80131 Naples, Italy.

A comprehensive phytochemical investigation of aerial parts obtained from L. led to the isolation of 14 terpenoids (-) and nine polyphenols (-). The sesquiterpenoid group (-) included three structural families, namely, elemanolides (-), eudesmanolides ( and ), and germacranolides (-) with four unreported secondary metabolites (-), whose structure has been determined by extensive spectroscopic analysis, including 1D/2D NMR, HR-MS, and chemical conversion.

Allelopathy Group, Department of Organic Chemistry, Facultad de Ciencias, Institute of Biomolecules (INBIO), University of Cadiz, C/Avenida República Saharaui, 7, 11510 Puerto Real, Spain.

The phytotoxicities of a selection of eudesmanolides and guaianolides, including natural products and new derivatives obtained by semisynthesis from plant-isolated sesquiterpene lactones, were evaluated in bioassays against three weeds of concern in agriculture ( L., L., and L.

Eight samples of leaves were collected at different locations in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in China, and their chemical constituents were investigated. Thirteen previously undescribed sesquiterpene lactones-seven germacranolides, three eudesmanolides, two guaianolides, and a 2-norelemanolide-were isolated, and their structures were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic analyses. The major constituents in the six samples from northwestern Yunnan and Sichuan are hiyodorilactones A and B, whereas that in the two samples from the region near Kunming, Yunnan is eupatoriopicrin.

The extract of the whole plant of L. yielded four new sesquiterpenes including a novel skeleton (claroguaiane A, ), two guaianolides (claroguaianes B-C, ), and one eudesmanolide (claroeudesmane A, ), together with three known sesquiterpenoids (). The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis especially 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and HRESIMS data.
