[Plastic surgical treatment of neurofibromatosis type 1].

Chirurgie (Heidelb)

Universitätsklinik für Plastische, Rekonstruktive und Ästhetische Chirurgie, Medizinische Universität Wien, Wien, Österreich.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1, formerly Recklinghausen's disease) is a genetic tumor predisposition syndrome in which the mutation of a tumor suppressor gene (neurofibromin) leads to the development of mostly benign neurofibromas of the skin and the central and peripheral nervous systems and malformations or tumors of other organ systems. Patients with NF1 should receive lifelong interdisciplinary care in specialized centers and important treatment decisions should be made by a regularly meeting interdisciplinary panel of experts. Plastic surgery plays an important role in the multidisciplinary management of all clinical forms of NF1-associated peripheral nerve sheath tumors, from cutaneous and subcutaneous to deep nodular and diffuse plexiform neurofibromas.

Introduction: The prevalence of maxillofacial fractures is rising due to increased road traffic accidents, necessitating prompt and effective management, especially in cases of panfacial fractures. The primary objective in treating such fractures is to restore occlusion and stabilize midface buttresses and pillars.

Case Report: This article presents the case of a 56-year-old male who sustained panfacial fractures following a road accident, exhibiting symptoms including facial pain and nosebleeds.

In current alloplastic total temporomandibular joint replacements (TMJRs) typically the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) insertion is sacrificed, affecting joint function. This study assesses a novel additively manufactured TMJR (CADskills BV, Gent, Belgium) designed to enable LPM reinsertion through a scaffold feature on the implant. Thirteen TMJRs were implanted in Swifter crossbreed sheep, with follow-up CT scans after 288 days to evaluate LPM reintegration.

This study examined the effects of treadmill running (TR) regimens on craniofacial pain- and anxiety-like behaviors, as well as their effects on neural changes in specific brain regions of male mice subjected to repeated social defeat stress (SDS) for 10 days. Behavioral and immunohistochemical experiments were conducted to evaluate the impact of TR regimens on SDS-related those behaviors, as well as epigenetic and neural activity markers in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), insular cortex (IC), rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM), and cervical spinal dorsal horn (C2). Behavioral responses were quantified using multiple tests, while immunohistochemistry measured histone H3 acetylation, histone deacetylases (HDAC1, HDAC2), and neural activity markers (FosB and phosphorylated cAMP response element-binding protein (pCREB).

Freshwater ecosystems face significant threats, including pollution, habitat loss, invasive species, and climate change. To address these challenges, management strategies and restoration efforts have been broadly implemented. Across Europe, such efforts have resulted in overall improvements in freshwater biodiversity, but recovery has stalled or failed to occur in many localities, which may be partly caused by the limited dispersal capacity of many species.
