A Si(111) surface modified with alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxyl groups was fabricated using activated alkynes such as propiolic acid and propiolic acid methyl ester via hydrosilylation reaction. The obtained coverage of carboxyl groups was roughly estimated to be 55-60% in both cases from the Si-2p and C-1s X-ray photoelectron specroscopy (XPS) peak intensities. The detailed surface structures were investigated by multiple internal reflection Fourier transform infrared (MIR-FTIR) measurement. It was revealed that this reaction was promoted by visible light irradiation at room temperature. The Si surface modified with functional groups prepared under such a moderate condition is adaptable to functional devices which are easily damaged under UV irradiation or high temperature conditions.

Microneedle (MN) sensors have great promise for food safety detection, but the rapid preparation of MNs for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors with tunable and homogeneous nanoparticles remains a great challenge. To address this, a SERS sensor of gold nanoparticles@polydopamine@poly(methyl methacrylate) MN (AuNPs@PDA@PMMA-MN) was developed. The extended-Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory was applied to calculate the interaction energy between AuNPs and PDA.

Inhalation delivery, offering a direct pathway for administering drugs to the lungs in the form of dry powders or aerosols, stands out as an optimal approach for the localized treatment of pulmonary diseases. However, the intricate anatomical architecture of the lung often poses challenges in maintaining effective drug concentrations within the lungs over extended periods. This highlights the pressing need to develop rational inhalable drug delivery systems that can improve treatment outcomes for respiratory diseases.

Restenosis remains a long-standing limitation to effectively maintain functional blood flow after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA). While the use of drug-coated balloons (DCBs) containing antiproliferative drugs has improved patient outcomes, limited tissue transfer and poor therapeutic targeting capabilities contribute to off-target cytotoxicity, precluding adequate endothelial repair. In this work, a DCB system was designed and tested to achieve defined arterial delivery of an antirestenosis therapeutic candidate, cadherin-2 (N-cadherin) mimetic peptides (NCad), shown to selectively inhibit smooth muscle cell migration and limit intimal thickening in early animal PTA models.

A novel electrochemical aptasensor based on bimetallic zirconium and copper oxides embedded within mesoporous carbon (denoted as ZrOCuO@mC) was constructed to detect miRNA. The porous ZrOCuO@mC was created through the pyrolysis of bimetallic zirconium/copper-based metal-organic framework (ZrCu-MOF). The substantial surface area and high porosity of ZrOCuO@mC nanocomposite along with its robust affinity toward aptamer strands, facilitated the effective anchoring of aptamer strands on the ZrOCuO@mC-modified electrode surface.

Metallic lithium plays an important role in the development of next-generation lithium metal-based batteries. However, the uncontrolled growth of lithium dendrites limits the use of lithium metal as an anode. In this context, a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is crucial for regulating dendrite formation, stability, and cyclability of lithium metal anodes.
