Published: August 2008

Background: Soft-tissue sarcomas are uncommon tumors that are infrequently seen in most surgical practices. They represent 6.5% of all cancers in children < 15 years of age and are the fifth leading cause of cancer death in that age group. This study was conducted to show the prevalence and pattern of distribution of rhabdomyosarcoma among children in a black African population.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 232 cases of soft-tissue sarcomas that were managed for a period of 22 years (1985-2006). Materials were obtained from the clinical records, operation notes and histopathology reports of the patients. The records of patients with rhabdomyosarcoma were analyzed in details.

Results: The result showed the age peak incidence for the total soft-tissue sarcomas occurring between the third and sixth decades of life. Rhabdomyosarcoma constitutes 9.5% of the total number of patients managed, and 54.5% of these patients are age < 20 years.

Conclusion: We conclude that parents must be educated about the need to look out for any mass on their children that persists for > 4 weeks so as to reduce the delayed and advanced stage of presentation.

Aims: To describe the imaging features of patients presenting with soft tissue masses and a provisional diagnosis of soft tissue tumours, for whom biopsy confirmed the presence of necrotising granulomata consistent with tuberculoma.

Material And Methods: A review of the histopathology database for patients who had a diagnosis of necrotising granulomata in nonspinal sites. Patients with bone and joint-based pathology were excluded.

Background And Objectives: Patients with cutaneous lymphomas (CL) are at an increased risk of developing secondary malignancies. This study aimed to assess the frequency of association between CL and Kaposi sarcoma (KS) and to identify factors that may promote the co-occurrence of these two diseases.

Patients And Methods: On January 25, 2024, we conducted a systematic search of four electronic medical databases to identify all published cases of KS associated with CL.

Introduction: This was the first phase 1 study conducted in the United States. It consisted of dose-escalation (part A) and multiple indication-specific cohort expansion (part B), investigating the safety and preliminary efficacy of toripalimab (anti-programmed cell death-1 inhibitor) in patients with advanced malignancies.

Methods: Patients with advanced malignancies that progressed after treatment with at least one prior line of standard systemic therapy, including the patients with advanced/recurrent cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), received toripalimab 240 mg every 3 weeks in part B.

Introduction: Soft-tissue sarcomas arising in the thigh may require total or subtotal compartmentectomy, with subsequent need for functional reconstruction with free functional muscle transfer (FFMT). We present our series, describing a new approach with chimeric propeller antero-lateral thigh-vastus lateralis (ALT-VL) free flap, which allows for independent muscle inset and soft tissue defect resurfacing.

Patient And Methods: A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database was performed, analyzing all patients referred to Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico, Rome, Italy, between 2018 and 2023 for soft-tissue sarcomas of the thigh requiring wide excision and reconstruction with functional ALT-VL.

Machine learning-based pan-cancer study of classification and mechanism of BRAF inhibitor resistance.

Department of Integrative Medicine, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Background: V-raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B1 (BRAF) inhibitor (BRAFi) therapy resistance affects approximately 15% of cancer patients, leading to disease recurrence and poor prognosis. The aim of the study was to develop a machine-learning based method to identify patients who are at high-risk of BRAFi resistance and potential biomarker.

Methods: From Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE) and Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer (GDSC) databases, we collected RNA sequencing and half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC) data from 235 pan-cancer cell lines and then identified 37 significant differential expression genes associated with BRAFi resistance.
