Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how seasonal influenza affects adults with invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in Japan, analyzing data from 1722 patients before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • It found that the seasonal influenza epidemic declined with the pandemic, and there was a notable decrease in bacteremic pneumonia cases during this time.
  • Additionally, patients with a history of seasonal influenza had a higher rate of bacteremic pneumonia and a greater risk of death, especially among older males, prior to the pandemic.

We report a fatal case of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM)-producing Escherichia coli in a bacteremic patient with sequential failure of aztreonam plus ceftazidime-avibactam followed by cefiderocol. Acquired resistance was documented phenotypically and mediated through preexisting and acquired mutations. This case highlights the need to rethink optimal treatment for NDM-producing organisms.

The Etiology, Antibiotic Therapy and Outcomes of Bacteremic Skin and Soft-Tissue Infections in Onco-Hematological Patients.

Antibiotics (Basel)

December 2023

Infectious Diseases Department, Bellvitge University Hospital, Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), University of Barcelona, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, 08907 Barcelona, Spain.

Objectives: to assess the current epidemiology, antibiotic therapy and outcomes of onco- hematological patients with bacteremic skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs), and to identify the risk factors for Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) infection and for early and overall mortality.

Methods: episodes of bacteremic SSTIs occurring in cancer patients at two hospitals were prospectively recorded and retrospectively analyzed.

Results: Of 164 episodes of bacteremic SSTIs, 53% occurred in patients with solid tumors and 47% with hematological malignancies.

Article Synopsis
  • Non-Typhoidal Salmonellas (NTSs) are widely prevalent in Italy, with over 3,500 cases reported annually, but there is limited data on salmonellosis.
  • A study involving 252 patients revealed that extreme ages were significantly associated with bacteremic infections, with invasive infections exhibiting a much higher mortality rate.
  • The study also noted a rising trend in antibiotic resistance, particularly to common antibiotics, and highlighted diarrhea and fever as the most frequent symptoms, emphasizing the serious impact of NTS infections on vulnerable populations.

Introduction: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) due to serogroup W meningococci (MenW) is consistently reported with atypical clinical manifestations, including gastrointestinal symptoms, bacteremic pneumonia, and septic arthritis. We undertook a systematic review of the literature for a comprehensive assessment of the clinical presentation of IMD caused by MenW.

Methods: PubMed and Embase databases were searched from inception to June 2022 using a combination of MeSH terms and free text for articles that reported symptoms and signs of MenW IMD, and associated manifestations.
