[Fitness to drive: which assessment by doctors in 2008?].

Rev Med Suisse

Service des automobiles et de la navigation du canton de Vaud, Unité de médecine, site de Genève, Centre universitaire romand de médecine légale, CHUV, Lausanne.

Published: July 2008

Medical problems related to car driving are more and more complex and frequent. In the most areas of Switzerland each doctor can be asked to assess the fitness to drive of his patients. Several guidelines from medical societies have been published recently in Switzerland. Therefore it appears to be useful to synthesize the essential knowledge to have before signing fitness-to-drive certificates.

Heatstroke characteristics and meteorological conditions in Hefei, China: thresholds and driving factors.

BMC Public Health

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Cities Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change in Shanghai (CMACC), Shanghai, 200092, China.

Background: Due to climate change and rapid urbanization, the frequency of heatwave events in East China has increased considerably since the 21st century, which has a considerable influence on human health, such as heatstroke. However, few studies have been conducted in this region on the relationship between heatstroke and meteorological conditions. To address this point, this study aimed to analyze the characteristics of heatstroke and their relationship with meteorological conditions in Hefei, China.

The evolution of sociality is one of the major evolutionary transitions in the history of life and a key step in this transition is the occurrence of kin associations. Yet, the question of what demographic processes and environmental factors generate kin-structured populations and drive kin-directed cooperation remains open. In this review, we synthesise 30 years of studies of the long-tailed tit Aegithalos caudatus, which has a kin-selected cooperative breeding system with redirected help: failed breeders may help to raise offspring of conspecifics, typically relatives, breeding nearby.

Bioenergetic trade-offs can reveal the path to superior microbial CO fixation pathways.

mSystems

January 2025

Department of Chemical and P. Engineering, Research and Innovation Centre on CO2 and H2 (RICH), Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

A comprehensive optimization of known prokaryotic autotrophic carbon dioxide (CO) fixation pathways is presented that evaluates all their possible variants under different environmental conditions. This was achieved through a computational methodology recently developed that considers the trade-offs between energy efficiency (yield) and growth rate, allowing us to evaluate candidate metabolic modifications for microbial conversions. The results revealed the superior configurations in terms of both yield (efficiency) and rate (driving force).

Alterations in energy metabolism may drive fatigue in older age, but prior research primarily focused on skeletal muscle energetics without assessing other systems, and utilized self-reported measures of fatigue. We tested the association between energy metabolism in the brain and an objective measure of fatigability in the Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging (N=119, age 76.8±4.
