Background: Tanis was reported as a putative receptor for serum amyloid A (SAA) involving glucose regulated protein in insulin regulated resistance. It was found to be dysregulated in diabetic rats (Psammomys obesus, Israeli sand rat) and its homologue for humans is SelS/AD-015. The present study analyzed mRNA expression of SelS in omental adipose tissue biopsies from patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and age- and weight-matched nondiabetic patients, the relationship of SelS mRNA with Homa-IR and serum SAA level.
Methods: Human omental adipose tissues from ten cases of type 2 diabetic patients and twelve cases of nondiabetic individuals were analyzed for the expression level of SelS mRNA by semiquantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Homa-IR estimated by standard formula and SAA level by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
Results: SelS mRNA expression, Homa-IR and serum SAA were higher in T2DM sufferers than in nondiabetic control group. SelS mRNA level was positively correlated with Homa-IR and SAA level in each group.
Conclusions: SelS protein may be involved in insulin resistance in Chinese with T2DM by acting as the SAA receptor, thus playing an important role in the development of T2DM and atherosclerosis.

Gene gains and losses are a major driver of genome evolution; their precise characterization can provide insights into the origin and diversification of major lineages. Here, we examined gene family evolution of 1,154 genomes from nearly all known species in the medically and technologically important yeast subphylum Saccharomycotina. We found that yeast gene family and genome evolution are distinct from plants, animals, and filamentous ascomycetes and are characterized by small genome sizes and smaller gene numbers but larger gene family sizes.

The trace element selenium (Se) plays a key role in development and various physiological processes, mainly through its transformation into selenoproteins. To investigate the developmental patterns of Se content and expression of selenoproteins, the liver and longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle of Duroc pigs were collected at 1, 21, 80, and 185 days of age (7 pigs each age) for the determination of Se content, mRNA expression of selenoproteins, and concentrations of glutathione peroxidase (GPX), thioredoxin reductase (TrxR or TXNRD), and selenoprotein P (SELP). The results showed that age significantly affected the expression of GPX1, GPX2, GPX3, TXNRD1, TXNRD2, TXNRD3, iodothyronine deiodinases 2 (DIO2), DIO3, SELF, SELH, SELM, SELP, SELS, SELW, and selenophosphate synthetase2 (SPS2) in the liver, as well as GPX3, GPX4, TXNRD1, TXNRD2, DIO2, DIO3, SELF, SELN, SELP, SELR, SELS, and SELW in the LD muscle of Duroc pigs.
