Failure to accurately document care provided is a significant threat to hospital revenue and compliance. What's more, it's only expected to become more important as documentation efforts grow increasingly more sophisticated to respond to the requirements of severity-based payment, as is being seen with Medicare severity-based diagnosis-related groups (MS-DRG). With this in mind, the following discussion, sponsored by 3M Health Information Systems, explores use of process change and technology to improve transcription and clinical documentation activities. Background: Unwarranted clinical variation presents a major challenge in contemporary healthcare, indicating potential inequalities and inefficiencies, and unrealised potential for better outcomes. Despite an increasing focus on unwarranted clinical variation, and consideration of efforts to address this challenge, evidence-based strategies which achieve this are limited. Audit and feedback of healthcare processes (process auditing) and clinician engagement are important tools which may help to reduce unwarranted clinical variation, however their application in maternity care is yet to be thoroughly explored.

A method using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) was developed and validated to quantify the innovative tool LightSpot®-FL-1, a selective permeability-glycoprotein (P-gp)-targeted fluorescent conjugate used to measure P-gp expression in cell samples. Quantifying P-gp is a major challenge in oncology as its overexpression in many cancer cells results in Multidrug Resistance (MDR) associated with chemotherapy failure. To develop the method reported herein, both sample preparation and analysis parameters were investigated.
