Pictures from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) were selected to manipulate affective valence (unpleasant, neutral, pleasant) while keeping arousal level the same. The pictures were presented in an oddball paradigm, with a visual pattern used as the standard stimulus. Subjects pressed a button whenever a target was detected. Experiment 1 presented normal pictures in color and black/white. Control stimuli were constructed for both the color and black/white conditions by randomly rearranging 1 cm square fragments of each original picture to produce a "scrambled" image. Experiment 2 presented the same normal color pictures with large, medium, and small scrambled condition (2, 1, and 0.5 cm squares). The P300 event-related brain potential demonstrated larger amplitudes over frontal areas for positive compared to negative or neutral images for normal color pictures in both experiments. Attenuated and nonsignificant valence effects were obtained for black/white images. Scrambled stimuli in each study yielded no valence effects but demonstrated typical P300 topography that increased from frontal to parietal areas. The findings suggest that P300 amplitude is sensitive to affective picture valence in the absence of stimulus arousal differences, and that stimulus color contributes to ERP valence effects.

Behavioral corroboration that Saitis barbipes jumping spiders cannot discriminate between males' red and black ornaments.

Physiological or genetic assays and computational modeling are valuable tools for understanding animals' visual discrimination capabilities. Yet sometimes, the results generated by these methods appear not to jive with other aspects of an animal's appearance or natural history, and behavioral confirmatory tests are warranted. Here we examine the peculiar case of a male jumping spider that displays red, black, white, and UV color patches during courtship despite the fact that, according to microspectrophotometry and color vision modeling, they are unlikely able to discriminate red from black.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the pollution of soil microplastics (MPs) in agricultural areas across China, highlighting the lack of systematic research on this issue.
  • Analysis of 6,694 samples from various regions reveals that MPs in soil can be identified by various colors, shapes, and types, with polyethylene being the most prevalent.
  • The findings suggest that natural environmental and socio-economic factors significantly influence the accumulation and characteristics of soil MPs, with the highest pollution levels observed in the South-central region of China.

Introduction: Looking at recent developments in multimedia learning research, the interaction between cognitive and affective processes is examined more extensively. Based on the emotional design hypothesis, for example, using colors, in contrast to black and white representations, for designing learning materials can elicit positive emotions, guide attention, increase motivation, and foster learning. The attention-guiding effect of colors might not be beneficial when used in learning-irrelevant, decorative pictures.

Image data serves as a valuable resource for investigating relationships between colors and emotions. This study conducts an image-based visual corpus analysis on the color associations of 100 Chinese emotion words, aiming to uncover the pivotal roles of colors in understanding emotional concepts. The study addresses two primary objectives: (i) examining the interrelations among four affective properties (valence, arousal, prototypicality, and emotionality) and four image-based color attributes (Jz: a dimension depicting black-white color distinction, Az: a dimension for green-red, Bz: a dimension for blue-yellow, and color variability) associated with these emotion words; and (ii) assessing the efficacy of image-based color information in profiling affective (dis)similarities among different emotion words.

Oyster shells exhibit varying color patterns-black, white, or black and white striations-attributable to differences in melanin content and distribution. In this study, we identified a new homolog of TBX2, a member of the T-box transcription factor family, in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) named CgTBX2. The mRNA expression of CgTBX2 was higher in tissues from white-shelled oysters than in those from black-shelled oysters.
