Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition influenced by diet, which affects gut microbiota and immune functions. The rising prevalence of IBD, linked to Western diets in developing countries, highlights the need for dietary interventions. This study aimed to assess the impact of white kidney beans (WKB) on gut inflammation and microbiota changes, focusing on their effects on enteric glial cells (EGCs) and immune activity in colitis.

NLRP3 is a BMI-independent mediator of stable COPD.

BMC Pulm Med

January 2025

İzmir International Biomedicine and Genome Institute, Dokuz Eylül University, İzmir, Türkiye.

Purpose: The inflammatory response in animal models of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is activated by the NLR-family-pyrin-domain-containing-3 (NLRP3) inflammasome pathway, which is also known to play a role in obesity-related inflammation. The NLRP3/caspase-1/interleukin (IL)-1β pathway might be involved in the progression of COPD with increasing body mass index. To our knowledge, no previous studies have explored the role of NLRP3 inflammasome markers in linking COPD and obesity.

Background: Inflammation is a critical protective response in the body, essential for combating infections and healing injuries. However, chronic inflammation can be harmful and significantly contribute to the development and progression of chronic diseases, with macrophage-mediated responses being central to these processes. This study presents "SBR-Pel," a new therapeutic blend of Shinbaro tab (SBR), a traditional herbal formula, and pelubiprofen (Pel), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, and investigated their combined anti-inflammatory effects to create a treatment that both improves efficacy and reduces side effects.

Background: Inflammation and maladaptive immune mechanisms have been substantiated as integral components in the critical pathological processes of the injury cascade in ischemic stroke (IS). This study aimed to explore the associations between six systemic inflammatory indices and IS in a Chinese population.

Methods: This was a case-control study based on the retrospective review of electronic medical records from two hospitals in Shandong Province, China.

The SERPINB4 gene mutation identified in twin patients with Crohn's disease impaires the intestinal epithelial cell functions.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Gastroenterology, The National Key Clinical Specialty, Clinical Research Center for Gut Microbiota and Digestive Diseases of Fujian Province, Key Laboratory for Intestinal Microbiome and Human Health of Xiamen, Zhongshan Hospital of Xiamen University, Xiamen, 361004, China.

Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease of unknown etiology. To identify new targets related to the initiation of CD, we screened a pair of twins with CD, which is a rare phenomenon in the Chinese population, for genetic susceptibility factors. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) of these patients revealed a mutation in their SERPINB4 gene.
