Published: September 2008

This article summarises the conference which took place during the " Centre Universitaire de Médecine Générale de l'Université Libre de Bruxelles" (C.U.M.G.-U.L.B.) Seminar in April 7-14, 2007. It is in no way an extensive review about gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), but instead an attempt of answering the most frequently asked questions by the general practitioner, reported in 9 pictures: 1. Definition, prevalence and physiopathology. 2. Work up and role of endoscopy. 3. Medical treatment. 4. PPI: Equivalence of the medications? Equivalence of the generic drugs? 5. Barrett's esophagus. 6. Reflux and negative endoscopy. 7. Extra-oesophageal manifestations. 8. Surgical treatments. 9. Endoscopic treatments.

Background: Surgical fundoplication remains integral in managing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) by addressing gastroesophageal valve incompetence. This study introduces a novel hybrid approach, the Eversion Cruroplasty and Collar Overwrap (ECCO) procedure, aiming to combine benefits of conventional partial wrapping and posteromedial cardiopexy, considering gastric fundus anatomical peculiarities as an anti-reflux barrier.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of pediatric patients presenting with refractory GERD from 2021 to 2023 was conducted.

Central Pancreatectomy as a Surgical Alternative for Parenchyma Preservation.

Cureus

December 2024

Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago, CHL.

Pancreatoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy are standard treatments for various pancreatic pathologies. These procedures involve radical resection and a significant loss of pancreatic tissue, which can lead to exocrine and/or endocrine pancreatic insufficiency. In selected cases of benign tumors or those with low malignant potential, central pancreatectomy can be performed with acceptable morbidity and mortality rates.

Introduction: High-resolution manometry (HRM) allows assessment of esophagogastric junction (EGJ) disruption. While type 3 EGJ predicts definitive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), type 2 EGJ is less clearly implicated in GERD pathogenesis. This study aimed to characterize physiologic findings in type 2 EGJ to determine if the HRM-based Milan Score can define GERD within type 2 EGJ.

Antireflux surgery - choosing the right candidate.

Expert Rev Gastroenterol Hepatol

January 2025

Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Amsterdam University Medical Center, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Introduction: Surgical gastric fundoplication is an effective treatment option for gastroesophageal reflux disease. In contrast to acid suppression, fundoplication nearly abolishes all types of reflux, acid and nonacid. However, in some cases lasting side effects of the procedure may overshadow its positive effects.
