In batch mesophilic anaerobic digestion of a mixture of iron-rich sludge collected from Fenton treatment of molasses wastewater (MWW) and thickened sewage sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant, the methane content in the gas from the mixture was significantly higher than that from thickened sewage sludge only. When minerals in iron-rich sludge obtained by incineration were fed to thickened sewage sludge in semi-continuous experiments, the methane content obtained by digestion of thickened sewage sludge only increased approximately from 53% to 64%. These results suggest that iron-rich sludge can enhance methane production for thickened sewage sludge.

Despite advances in anaerobic digestion (AD), full-scale implementation faces significant challenges, particularly during the start-up phase, where inoculum selection is crucial. This study examines the impact of inoculum choice on the operational and economic performance of thermophilic digesters during the start-up phase. Methanogenic reactors R3 and R4 were inoculated with digested sludge (DiS) and diluted sewage sludge (DSS), respectively, and fed with hydrolyzed source-sorted organic fraction of municipal solid waste (SS-OFMSW) and thickened sewage sludge, which were processed in R1 and R2, serving as acidogenic reactors.

Hereby, we explored the effect of coupling biochar addition and thermal pretreatment in anaerobic mono-digestion and co-digestion of thermally pretreated thickened waste activated sludge (PTWAS) with food waste (FW). Batch leaching experiments were conducted to evaluate the release of forty per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from sludge samples collected after thickening, anaerobic digestion, and dewatering processes at two wastewater treatment plants. The South District wastewater treatment plant (SDWWTP), which receives domestic wastewater and landfill leachate from a nearby landfill, and the Central District wastewater treatment plant (CDWWTP), which receives only domestic wastewater, were selected for this study. PFAS released into the aqueous phase were analyzed by sacrificial sampling after 1, 3, 7, 14, and 30 days.

A series of dewaterability tests were conducted on various types of sludges to establish a wholistic relationship between sludge water fractions. Sludge samples were obtained from batch and continuous sludge digesters, which were operated anaerobically and aerobically under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. Dewaterability of the sludge samples and the distribution of water fractions were studied using centrifugation and thermal drying.
