Sacral rib: a rare congenital anomaly.

Acta Orthop Belg

Department of Radiodiagnosis, JN Medical College, AMU, Aligarh, India 202002.

Published: June 2008

A 45-year-old patient reported for a follow-up visit after a motor vehicle accident with a history of vague right flank pain. He underwent a pelvic radiograph which revealed a long bony protuberance arising from the right sacral region; the appearance was consistent with a sacral rib. However due to the limited nature of his complaints the patient denied any surgical treatment.

Introduction: Congenital lumbar kyphosis is present in about 15% of patients with myelomeningocele. Worsening of deformity with complications such as chronic skin ulcers and bone exposure is common. In patients under 8 years of age, treatment becomes even more challenging: in addition to resecting the apex of the kyphotic deformity, we should ideally stabilize the spine with fixation methods that do not interrupt the growth of the rib cage, associated with the challenging pelvic fixation in this population.

Spinal instrumentation length affects adjacent segment range of motion and intradiscal pressure.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Institute of Orthopaedic Research and Biomechanics, Trauma Research Centre Ulm, Ulm University Medical Centre, Helmholtzstraße 14, 89081, Ulm, Germany.

Scoliosis instrumentation length depends on the type and degree of deformity and the individual preference of the surgeon. This in vitro study aimed to explore effects of increasing instrumentation length on adjacent segment mobility and intervertebral disc loading. Six fresh frozen human spine specimens (C7-sacrum) with entire rib cage from young adult donors (26-45 years) were loaded with pure moments of 5 Nm.

Comparison of ultra-wide band microwave system and ultrasound in live cattle to predict beef carcase subcutaneous fatness.

Meat Sci

February 2025

School of Agricultural Sciences, Centre for Animal Production and Health, Food Futures Institute, Murdoch University, WA 6150, Australia.; Advanced Livestock Measurement Technologies Project, Meat and Livestock Australia, NSW 2060, Australia.

Ultrasound and ultrawide band microwave system (MiS) were directly compared in their ability to scan live cattle to predict carcase traits. Commercial beef cattle (n = 315) were scanned on farm 0-14 days prior to slaughter. Traits measured were subcutaneous fatness at the P8 site (over the gluteus muscle on the rump, at the intersection of a line through the pin bone parallel to the chine and perpendicular through the 3rd sacral crest) and subcutaneous fatness at the rib fat site (between 12th & 13th rib, ¾ of the length ventrally over the longissimus muscle).

Objectives: This study evaluates whether sacralization of a lumbar vertebra and lumbarization of a sacral vertebra are a paired duality but with opposite expressions; the former is associated with 23 presacral vertebrae (PSV) and the latter with 25 PSV. Are sacralization and lumbarization local phenomena, involving only vertebra (V) 24 and V25, or are they associated with other costal-vertebral transformations?

Materials And Methods: Study sample is of skeletonized humans, 431 females and 1405 males, who were 20-49 years of age-at-death and who died in the United States in the 20th and 21st centuries. Data collected are numbers of PSV and sacral vertebrae, presence of rib of V7, position of diaphragmatic vertebra, and transverse process and rib lengths of V5-V9, V18-V19, and V21-V22.

The aim of this case report is to present a rare case of epidural Ewing sarcoma with spinal cord compression, which is an uncommon presentation of this tumor. Ewing's sarcoma is a primary malignant tumor predominantly affecting individuals in their second decade of life, primarily impacting those aged 10 to 25, with the average age of onset being around 20 years. Epidemiological studies reveal that this cancer most commonly arises in the diaphyses of the long tubular bones in the lower extremities.
