Energized mouse liver mitochondria displayed the same calcium retention capacity (a sensitive measure of the propensity of the permeability transition pore (PTP) to open) irrespective of whether phosphate, arsenate, or vanadate was the permeating anion. Unexpectedly, however, phosphate was specifically required for PTP desensitization by cyclosporin A (CsA) or by genetic inactivation of cyclophilin D (CyP-D). Indeed, when phosphate was replaced by arsenate, vanadate, or bicarbonate, the inhibitory effects of CsA and of CyP-D ablation on the PTP disappeared. After loading with the same amount of Ca(2+) in the presence of arsenate or vanadate but in the absence of phosphate, the sensitivity of the PTP to a variety of inducers was identical in mitochondria from wild-type mice, CyP-D-null mice, and wild-type mice treated with CsA. These findings call for a reassessment of conclusions on the role of the PTP in cell death that are based on the effects of CsA or of CyP-D ablation.

The conventional VO-WO/TiO catalyst suffers severely from arsenic poisoning, leading to a significant loss of catalytic activity. The doping of Al or Mo plays an important role in promoting the arsenic resistance on NH selective catalytic reduction (NH-SCR), but their promotion mechanism remains in debate and has yet to be explored in multipollutant control (MPC) of NO and chlorinated organics. Herein, our experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that arsenic species preferentially adsorb on both Al and Mo to form arsenate, thereby avoiding bonding to the catalytically active V sites.

A new copper vanadyl arsenate, Cu(VO)(AsO), was synthesized via the chemical vapor transport method. Cu(VO)(AsO) adopts an original structure type. It is characterized by layers formed by edge-sharing and corner-sharing V-centered octahedra resulting in a unique topology that was hitherto not reported for vanadates.

Nanomaterials have versatile properties owing to their high surface-to-volume ratio and can thus be used in a variety of applications. This work focused on applying a facile hydrothermal strategy to prepare praseodymium vanadate nanoparticles due to the importance of nanoparticles in today's society and the fact that their synthesis might be a challenging endeavor. The structural and morphological characterizations were carried out to confirm the influence of the optimizations on the reaction's outcomes, which revealed praseodymium vanadate (PrVO) with a tetragonal crystal system.
