Olfactory Dysfunction in Allergic Rhinitis.

Clin Rev Allergy Immunol

December 2024

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Olfactory dysfunction (OD) can have serious consequences as it hinders individuals from detecting important warning signals like smoke, spoiled food, and gas leaks. This can significantly impact their nutritional status, eating satisfaction, and overall quality of life. Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common disease that greatly affects the quality of life and can lead to a decrease, distortion, or complete loss of olfactory ability.

The epileptogenic network in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) contains structures of the primary and secondary olfactory cortex such as the piriform and entorhinal cortex, the amygdala, and the hippocampus. Olfactory auras and olfactory dysfunction are relevant symptoms of TLE. This study aims to characterize olfactory function in TLE using olfactory testing and olfactory functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated weight changes in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) receiving Dupilumab therapy, focusing on the link between weight gain and improved sense of smell over a year.
  • Results showed significant weight gain and olfactory improvement in patients who had mild smell dysfunction or normal smell before treatment, while those with complete loss of smell did not experience significant weight changes.
  • The findings suggest that improvements in nasal function from the treatment may impact weight, but further research is needed to clarify the relationship between olfactory changes and weight regulation in CRSwNP patients.

Introduction: While olfactory function decreases with age, it is unknown how age affects olfactory training (OT) efficacy. This study compared OT in two cohorts of subjects: aged ≤50 (younger cohort) and aged 51+ (older cohort) with olfactory dysfunction (OD) primarily from COVID-19 infection.

Methods: Subjects with OD primarily secondary to COVID-19 infection were prospectively recruited and enrolled into an OT registry.

Importance: Olfactory impairment (OI) and frailty are prevalent conditions associated with aging, but studies investigating their association with each other have been discordant.

Objective: To summarize current evidence surrounding the association between OI and frailty.

Data Sources: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, SCOPUS, and CINAHL from inception to November 28, 2023.
