Total replacement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has been done in the UK since 1987. The three currently available systems are the Christensen system, the TMJ Concepts system and the Lorenz (BMF) system. Data from surgeons who replace TMJ were collated up to May 2007. There were nine units (eight NHS, one private) offering replacement. The TMJ Concepts system is the most popular of the three systems. Units are treating between five and 12 patients each year with an estimated total annual workload of 60-65 patients. The current total costs range from pound 15 000 to pound 19 000 for bilateral replacement. The most worrying complication is infection, which may affect up to 2.6% of patients.

In current alloplastic total temporomandibular joint replacements (TMJRs) typically the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) insertion is sacrificed, affecting joint function. This study assesses a novel additively manufactured TMJR (CADskills BV, Gent, Belgium) designed to enable LPM reinsertion through a scaffold feature on the implant. Thirteen TMJRs were implanted in Swifter crossbreed sheep, with follow-up CT scans after 288 days to evaluate LPM reintegration.

Objectives: Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) with condylar resorption is a multifactorial condition involving hormonal imbalance and articular disk dysfunction, often leading to severe TMJ degeneration. This study investigated the combined effects of estrogen deficiency and anterior articular disk derangement (ADD) on condylar bone resorption in a mouse model.
Methods: Female C57BL/6J mice underwent ovariectomy (OVX) to induce estrogen deficiency and ADD was surgically induced for stress.

Geriatric oral health care encounters significant challenges with the increase in the proportion of older individuals. Age-related changes in the dentition, muscles, and joints result in a decline in objective masticatory function, subjective restoration requirements, and acceptability among the elderly population, with individual variations influenced by systemic health. Considering functional requirements, the adaptability of stomatognathic and systemic health conditions, health economics and other factors, the authors believe that it should not be limited to the conventional "one-to-one" strategy for replacing missing teeth in geriatric prosthodontics.

A state-of-the-art scaffold capable of efficiently reconstructing the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc after discectomy remains elusive. The major challenge has been to identify a degradable scaffold that remodels into TMJ disc-like tissue, and prevents increased joint pathology, among other significant complications. Tissue engineering research provides a foundation for promising approaches towards the creation of successful implants/scaffolds that aim to restore the disc.
