Purpose: To examine the relationship between the prevalence of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and intraocular pressure (IOP) and the impact of central corneal thickness (CCT) on this relationship.

Design: Population-based cross-sectional study.

Methods: The study cohort consisted of 5,970 participants from the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study (LALES) with no history of glaucoma treatment and with complete ophthalmic examination data. The relationship between the prevalence of OAG and IOP was contrasted across persons with CCT designated as thin, normal, or thick.

Results: Prevalence of OAG was exponentially related to IOP. When stratified by CCT, persons with thin CCT had a significantly higher prevalence of OAG than did those with normal or thick CCTs at all levels of IOP. Adjusting each IOP individually for CCT did not impact significantly the relationship between the prevalence of OAG and IOP.

Conclusions: These findings suggest that adjusting for the impact of CCT on IOP by correction algorithms is not necessary in a population based assessment of glaucoma prevalence; CCT, however, is an important independent risk factor for the prevalence of OAG.

Purpose: Bisphosphonates (BPs) are first line agents commonly used in the management of osteoporosis. There have been two case reports that have suggested a possible link between BPs and acute angle closure (AAC). In the absence of any large epidemiologic studies, we sought to determine the risk of AAC and OAG with bisphosphonate use in patients with osteoporosis.

Purpose Of Review: Rapid increase in the prevalence of myopia has been documented worldwide. Myopia, especially high myopia, is not only an important risk factor for having open angle glaucoma (OAG), but also has a strong linking with the progression of OAG. Since myopic axial length (AXL) elongation is associated with nonglaucomatous optic nerve head (ONH) and visual field abnormalities, myopia poses a challenge in differential diagnosis of OAG.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examines the link between Moyamoya disease (MMD) and open-angle glaucoma (OAG) using data from 36,432 MMD patients and 346,769 matched controls in South Korea from 2002 to 2022.
  • - Researchers used statistical models to find that patients with MMD had a significantly higher risk of developing OAG compared to those without MMD, with a hazard ratio of 1.26.
  • - The cumulative incidence of OAG was 3.7% in the MMD group versus 2.9% in the control group, indicating that MMD patients consistently faced a greater risk of developing OAG throughout the study.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate biologically meaningful endotypes of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) by applying unsupervised machine learning to plasma metabolites.

Methods: This retrospective longitudinal cohort study enrolled consecutive patients aged ≥20 years with OAG at Tohoku University Hospital from January 2017 to January 2020. OAG was confirmed based on comprehensive ophthalmic examinations.

Incidence of blindness in open-angle glaucoma in Sweden: a long-term follow-up study.

Ups J Med Sci

November 2024

Department of Surgical Sciences, Ophthalmology, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden.

Background: Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness. There are no prospective studies on the risk of developing blindness in both eyes in individuals with definite OAG.

Methods: A total of 354 patients with newly diagnosed OAG, who had participated in four studies conducted at the Eye Department in Tierp, Sweden, from 1979 to 2006, were included in the investigation.
