We propose to refine the refractive index of the layers composing optical filters while keeping their optical thicknesses constant. Using this technique, one can optimize filters made of quarter-wave layers using conventional optimization techniques, while preserving the possibility to use turning-point monitoring during their fabrication. Application of this method to the design of a dual narrowband filter and a tilted edge filter demonstrates its effectiveness.

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) stand at the intersection of polymer science and liquid crystal technology, offering a unique blend of optical versatility and mechanical durability. These composite materials are composed of droplets of liquid crystals interspersed in a matrix of polymeric materials, harnessing the optical properties of liquid crystals while benefiting from the structural integrity of polymers. The responsiveness of LCs combined with the mechanical rigidity of polymers make polymer/LC composites-where the polymer network or matrix is used to stabilize and modify the LC phase-extremely important for scientists developing novel adaptive optical devices.

To compare the long-term efficacy and safety of intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments using a 590-nm and an acne filter. In this prospective, randomized, paired-eye trial study, 30 patients with moderate and severe meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) were followed up for at least one month after their last treatment. Group A received IPL treatment with an acne filter, a type of notch filter that blocks wavelengths between 600 and 800 nm, allowing IPL to emit wavelengths between 400-600 nm and 800-1200 nm.

The accurate measurement of cooking vessel temperatures in induction hobs is crucial for ensuring optimal cooking performance and safety. To achieve this, improvements in existing measurement methods such as thermocouples, thermistors, and infrared (IR) temperature sensors are being explored. However, traditional IR sensors are sensitive to interference from the heated glass ceramic, severely affecting accuracy.

Adhesive joining has the severe limitation that damages/defects developed in the bondline are difficult to assess. Conventional non-destructive examination (NDE) techniques are adequate to reveal disbonding defects in fabrication and delamination near the end of service life but are not helpful in detecting and monitoring in-service degradation of the joint. Several techniques suitable for long-term joint integrity monitoring are proposed.
