Purpose: Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is a severe complication of retinal detachment, which can be treated surgically by relaxing retinectomy. In this study, we describe patients with severe inferior retinal folding after this surgical intervention (SIRF).

Methods: A retrospective review of the electronic patient records of 254 patients who received relaxing retinectomies was performed to identify patients with SIRF.

Results: Five patients (1.97% of those with retinectomy) were identified with SIRF, mean age, 51.4 years; mean follow-up, 36 months. Three patients had rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) with PVR, one had a dropped nucleus with RRD and PVR and one with giant retinal dialysis from ocular trauma. SIRF was noted from a mean 4.2 months after the retinectomy. All involved the macula and visions were hand movements or perception of light.

Conclusions: SIRF is an uncommon but devastating complication of relaxing retinectomy with a poor visual outcome. This is the first description of this condition that we are aware of.

Purpose: To analyze the visual and anatomical outcomes for eyes with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and advanced proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) undergoing giant peripheral retinotomy (GPR) using 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy (PPV).

Methods: In this retrospective multi-center study, patients with RRD with either anteroposterior or circumferential retinal shortening and advanced PVR requiring more than 90-degree GPR with/without relaxing retinotomy were included. Subjects of either gender, any age group, and with complete surgical notes were included.

Retinotomy refers to "cutting" or "incising" the retina, whereas retinectomy denotes "excising" the retina. Retinotomies and retinectomies aid in tackling traction and retinal shortening that persist following membrane dissection and scleral buckling. We performed a literature search using Google Scholar and PubMed, followed by a review of the references procured.

Purpose: To perform a pilot study to evaluate the role of sub-silicone oil Triamcinolone Acetonide (TA) crystal drops in complex Retinal Detachment (RD) with extreme proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) requiring 360-degree relaxing retinectomy (RR).

Design: It was a retrospective pilot study.

Purpose: : To analyze the anatomical and visual outcomes of microincision vitrectomy surgery (MIVS) with silicone oil tamponade in eyes having coloboma-related retinal detachment (RD) and evaluate the risk factors for recurrence of RD.

Methods: : This was a retrospective, multicentric analysis of eyes having coloboma RD undergoing MIVS with silicone oil tamponade between March 2010 and July 2018.

Results: : We evaluated 148 eyes of 144 patients.

Unfolding falciform folds and their consequences - To touch or not to touch.

Indian J Ophthalmol

March 2022

Vitreoretina Service, Disha Eye Hospitals; Occuloplasty and Comprehensive Ophthalmology, Disha Eye Hospitals, Barrackpore, Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

Background: Falciform folds are congenital tractional retinal folds due to strong contractile forces and hyperextensibility of retina resulting in temporal dragging of the macula and often associated with familial exudative vitreoretinopathy and retinal detachment (RD). Retinologists are reluctant to treat these entities in view of their poor visual recovery.

Purpose: To describe a novel surgical technique to unfold the falciform folds.
