Background: Our aim was to determine the effects of cardiopulmonary bypass procedures on the optic nerve by retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measurements.
Methods: Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness was measured using the GDx Nerve Fiber Analyser, 1 day before the surgery and on postoperative days 1, 5 and 30 in 20 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting surgery.
Results: Postoperative mean values for retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, except symmetry on the first day and except symmetry and superior nasal ratio on the fifth day, were statsitically decreased. Only the value for the inferior ratio was significantly lower at the end of the first month.
Conclusions: Cardiopulmonary bypass procedures cause a temporary decrease in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness.

Obesity, along with hypoxia, is known to be a risk factor for pulmonary hypertension (PH), which can lead to right ventricular hypertrophy and eventually heart failure. Both obesity and PH influence the autonomic nervous system (ANS), potentially aggravating changes in the right ventricle (RV). This study investigates the combined effects of obesity and hypoxia on the autonomic innervation of the RV in a mouse model.

Background/ Aims: To analyze the longitudinal change in Bruch's membrane opening minimal rim width (BMO-MRW) and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness using optical coherence tomography (OCT) after implantation of a PRESERFLO® microshunt for surgical glaucoma management in adult glaucoma patients.
Methods: Retrospective data analysis of 59 eyes of 59 participants undergoing implantation of a PRESERFLO microshunt between 2019 and 2022 at a tertiary center for glaucoma management. Surgical management included primary temporary occlusion of the glaucoma shunt to prevent early hypotony.

Histological chorioamnionitis (HCA) is a form of maternal immune activation (MIA) linked to an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. Our previous study identified neurodevelopmental impairments in an MIA mouse model mimicking HCA. Thus, this study investigated the role of CD11c microglia, key contributors to myelination through IGF-1 production, in this pathology.

Neurite degeneration (ND) precedes cell death in many neurodegenerative diseases. However, it remains unclear how this compartmentalized cell death process is orchestrated in the central nervous system (CNS). The establishment of a CNS axotomy model (using modified 3D LUHMES cultures) allowed us to study metabolic control of ND in human midbrain-derived neurons without the use of toxicants or other direct disturbance of cellular metabolism.

The impact of various neurodegenerative diseases on the retina has been investigated in recent years using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Epilepsy, classified as a neurodegenerative disorder, has been indicated to affect the structural integrity of the retina. Moreover, there is ongoing debate regarding the relative contribution of disease pathogenesis and the consumption of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) to these retinal changes.
