Burns to the pediatric population are a prevalent problem that can have long-term if not fatal consequences. Although burns to the trunk have equally negative cosmetic effects from disfigurement for both boys and girls, burns to the trunk of the developing female, particularly those involving the breast, have an additional psychologic component due to the potential loss of femininity. This article aims to comprehensively review the proper management and treatment options for these patients based on mechanism of burn injury, both from an initial management and a staged reconstruction point of view.

Introduction: Burn injuries are a global health challenge, causing significant pain, tissue damage and complex wound management issues. Traditional treatments like surgical debridement, while effective, pose challenges such as blood loss, grafting requirements, and prolonged hospital stays. Enzymatic debridement, such as the Nexobrid procedure, effectively removes necrotic tissue but can be painful for patients.

This clinical case report describes the reconstructive management of a child who developed a rare aggressive soft tissue infection - necrotizing fasciitis - complicating varicella skin lesions, with a synthetic dermal regenerative template - NovoSorb Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix - in conjunction with a split thickness meshed skin graft. The scarcity of this clinical case, the need to cover large skin defect promptly while facing infectious and pediatric challenges make it interesting to describe NovoSorb Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix in addition to split thickness meshed skin graft a novel treatment in necrotizing fasciitis of the child. A rapid surgical treatment followed by this reconstructive strategy achieved an acceptable functional and aesthetic result, with timely healing despite the severity and extensive surface area of the infection.

Background: Deep burns to the upper abdomen that involve the submammary fold can lead to downward contracture and may cause significant asymmetry in a single breast, which can cause serious aesthetic and psychological problems, especially when they occur during childhood or before puberty. The objective of this study was to establish a practical treatment approach for postburn unilateral breast reconstruction after downward contracture.

Method: We conducted this retrospective review of patients with postburn unilateral breast deformity who underwent reconstruction using the expanded lateral thoracic flap and torso advancement flap from 2016 through 2021.
