Objectives: Describe stress distribution and compare stress concentration factor (K(t)) for homogeneous micro-specimens with different notch geometries and stick-shaped homogeneous and bimaterial specimens by means of finite element (FE) analysis.
Methods: Axisymmetric models were created for homogeneous specimens with different notches and for stick-shaped homogeneous and bimaterial specimens. FE mesh was refined at areas of expected stress concentration and boundary conditions included an applied tensile stress in the axial direction. Linear elastic analysis was used.
Results: For hourglass homogeneous specimens, K(t) equaled 1.32 and 1.12 for a notch radius of 0.6mm and 3.3mm, respectively. A non-uniform axial (sigma(zz)) stress distribution was found in the notch cross-section, with values at the outer edge being 78% and 25% larger than at the center. In addition, a triaxial stress state was generated. Stick-shaped and dumbbell homogeneous specimens presented K(t)=1 and a uniform, uniaxial stress distribution along the entire cross-section. Shear stresses were zero for all homogeneous specimens. When an adhesive interface was added to the stick-shaped specimen, an area of localized axial stress concentration (K(t)=1.55) was detected at the bimaterial joint near the outer edge. Normal stresses sigma(rr) and sigma(thetatheta) and shear stress tau(zr) were also non-zero at the free-edge.
Conclusions: Dumbbell or stick-shaped specimens are favored for muTBS testing, as they do not present stress concentrations due to geometry. However, dissimilar mechanical properties of joint components will lead to stress concentrations and non-uniform multi-axial stresses, although to a lesser extent.

The increasing shift from cannabis smoking to cannabis vaping is largely driven by the perception that vaping to form an aerosol represents a safer alternative to smoking and is a form of consumption appealing to youth. Herein, we compared the chemical composition and receptor-mediated activity of cannabis smoke extract (CaSE) to cannabis vaping extract (CaVE) along with the biological response in human bronchial epithelial cells. Chemical analysis using HPLC and GC/MS revealed that cannabis vaping aerosol contained fewer toxicants than smoke; CaSE and CaVE contained teratogens, carcinogens, and respiratory toxicants.

Subsidy-stress gradients offer a useful framework for understanding ecological responses to perturbation and may help inform ecological metrics in highly modified systems. Historic, region-wide shifts from bottomland hardwood forest to row crop agriculture can cause positively skewed impact gradients in alluvial plain ecoregions, resulting in tolerant organisms that typically exhibit a subsidy response (increased abundance in response to environmental stressors) shifting to a stress response (declining abundance at higher concentrations). As a result, observed biological tolerance in modified ecosystems may differ from less modified regions, creating significant challenges for detecting biological responses to restoration efforts.

Background: 7-Hydroxymethotrexate (7-OHMTX) is the main metabolite in plasma following high-dose MTX (HD-MTX), which may result in activity and toxicity of the MTX. Moreover, 7-OHMTX could produce crystalline-like deposits within the renal tubules under acidic conditions or induce renal inflammation, oxidative stress, and cell apoptosis through various signaling pathways, ultimately leading to kidney damage.
