The Sceptor System (Becton Dickinson) was compared with an agar dilution method for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of veterinary clinical isolates. The results indicate that the Sceptor System may be used to test gram-positive and fastidious gram-negative bacteria.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry has been widely used to analyze hundreds of organic acids in urine to provide a diagnostic basis for organic acidemia. However, it is difficult to operate in clinical laboratories on a daily basis due to sample pretreatment processing. Therefore, we aimed to develop a fully automated system for quantifying serum organic acids using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

The aim of this study was to determine the epidemiological and molecular characteristics of hospital-acquired (HA)-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates by investigating the distribution of clinical samples according to the hospital wards, antibiotic susceptibility patterns, staphylococcal chromosome cassette mec (SCCmec) types and the presence of Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) genes. A total of 110 MRSA isolates obtained from various clinical samples of inpatients at Hacettepe University Adult Hospital between January 2004 and December 2005 were included in the study. The identification of the isolates was done by BD Sceptor automated system (Becton Dickinson, USA).

Purpose: To evaluate three methods for 406 isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) for the detection of methicillin resistance (MR) using National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) new interpretive criteria.
Methods: We used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as a gold standard method to evaluate three methods [disk diffusion with Mueller-Hinton agar (MHA) and mannitol salt agar (MSA) and Sceptor system (Becton Dickinson, USA)] for the detection of mecA gene. The isolates that were methicillin-resistant with any of the three tests were evaluated further for MR by E-test.

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of PER-1 type extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) in nosocomial Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated in Hacettepe University Adult Hospital. Sixty-seven non-duplicate P. aeruginosa isolates from patients with nosocomial infections between January 2002 and December 2004 were included in the study.
