Virus-like particles shown to be associated with hepatitis A infection were recently visualized by immune electron microscopy in human and chimpanzee acute-phase fecal extracts. Agarose gel filtration of concentrated chimpanzee fecal extracts containing those 27-nm diameter particles separated more than 99% of the high molecular weight fecal impurities into two major peaks as determined by absorbance at 280 and 260 nm. The hepatitis A-associated particles were found between these two peaks by both immune electron microscopy and a new immunoradiometric assay.

Context: Prebiotics are often added to infant formulas to mimic the benefits of oligosaccharides found in human milk.
Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of prebiotic-supplemented cow's milk-based formula on the gut microbiota, gut environment, growth parameters, and safety and tolerance in infants ≤6 months old, compared with a standard formula or human milk comparator.
Data Sources: Searches were performed in the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses databases.

This study aimed to investigate the potential hypoglycemic mechanism of red ginseng acidic polysaccharides (RGAP) from the perspective of fatty acid (FA) regulation. A high-glucose/high-fat diet in conjunction with streptozotocin administration was employed to establish type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rat models, and their fecal FAs were detected using the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method. RGAP treatment alleviated the polyphagia, polydipsia, weight loss, and hyperglycemia observed in T2DM rats.

Faecal samples were collected from 216 Tibetan pigs and 78 Tibetan Yorkshire (Large White) and 53 tissue samples from Yorkshire from the Linzhi City slaughterhouse. Total RNA was extracted from faeces and fragments of HEV open reading frame 2 (ORF2) detected by reverse transcription and nested polymerase chain reaction (RT-nPCR) and cloned.

The virome, composed of viruses inhabiting diverse ecosystems, significantly influences microbial community dynamics and host health. The phenol-chloroform DNA extraction protocol for viromes, though effective, is time-intensive and requires the use of multiple toxic chemicals. This study introduces a streamlined, scalable protocol for DNA extraction using a commercially-available kit as an alternative, assessing its performance against the phenol-chloroform method across human fecal, mouse fecal, and soil samples.

Background: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a prevalent infectious condition in children. This study aimed to assess the regulatory effects of Re-Du-Ning on the intestinal microflora of pediatric patients with HFMD.
Methods: Fecal samples were collected from children affected by HFMD, who were diagnosed at the traditional Chinese medicine pediatrics outpatient and emergency departments of Liuzhou Women and Children's Healthcare Hospital, as well as from healthy children undergoing physical examinations at the same hospital during the same period.
