We report the self-assembly of a hydrophilic 8-(m-acetylphenyl)-2'-deoxyguanosine (mAG) derivative into a discrete and thermally stable hexadecameric supramolecule in aqueous media. We demonstrate that this hexadecamer is isostructural to the one formed by a related lipophilic derivative in organic media. This mAG moiety represents a rare example of a small-molecule recognition motif that is capable of assembling isostructurally and with high fidelity in both organic and aqueous media.

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are composed of nanometric metal-oxide anions and have rich solution chemistry. In this class, Keggin POMs have been identified as the most influential inorganic additives for aqueous nonionic soft matter systems. POMs being at the borderline of classical ions and charged colloids possess fascinating solution properties; the present work aims to delve deeper into the interactions between nanoions and nonionic soft matters from a spectroscopic point of view.

Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining is widely used to stain osteoclasts in histological bone sections. The red dye formed by the conventional TRAP enzymatic reaction using naphthol AS-MX (or AS-BI) phosphate and fast red-violet (or garnet) chromogens is readily soluble in alcohol or xylene and requires air-drying prior to cover slipping or the use of an aqueous mounting medium. However, the use of an aqueous mounting medium makes it difficult to store stained specimens for a long time.

Residual dipolar coupling (RDC) not only contributes to the dynamic analysis of proteins but also provides a robust route for the structure determination of small organic compounds. An essential prerequisite for this methodology is the availability of alignment media. Herein, a series of novel peptide-based alignment media are generated by introducing D-type or halogen-bearing amino acids for RDC measurements.

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are typically synthesized in organic solvents, leading to poor compatibility with water, weak affinity and selectivity for target molecules in aqueous media. To address these challenges, a green and sustainable synthesis of sandwich bread-like ATP@MIP was conducted using polyethylenimide (PEI) and deep eutectic solvent (DES) as hydrophilic bi-functional monomers via layer-by-layer self-assembly on the attapulgite (ATP) carrier. The new ATP@MIP can provide a higher density of imprinting sites with more orderly and uniform distribution due to inhibiting the competitive polymerization between PEI and DES, thereby significantly enhancing recognition ability.

Stimulus-responsive molecular materials are highly desirable because of the wide range of their potential applications. In particular, switching of physical properties opens application pathways for molecular materials as sensors or actuators. Property switching in solids can be achieved by inducing single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) phase transitions.
