Objective: To study the distribution of aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) polymorphisms between healthy Zhuang and Han ethnic individuals in Guangxi Autonomous Region and its influence to the behaviors of alcohol consumption.

Methods: Polymerase chain reaction with confronting two-pair primers (PCR-CTPP) and polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) techniques were used to genotype ALDH2, respectively, and alcohol consumption was recorded in a constructed questionnaire.

Results: The frequencies of ALDH2 alleles (ALDH2(1)/ALDH2(2)) among Zhuang and Han ethnics were 0.511, 0.489 and 0.508, 0.492 respectively (chi2 = 0.001, P > 0.05). The ALDH2 genotypes were verified with PCR-RFLP method. The frequencies of ALDH2(1) genotype in alcoholics (> or = 3 times drinking per week) were 35.59% and 15.67% in Zhuang and Han groups respectively (chi2 = 5.800, P = 0.016).

Conclusion: There was no significant different distribution of ALDH2 genotype among healthy Zhuang and Han ethnic people. The genotype of ALDH2 in different ethnicity might influence individual behavior of alcohol consumption.

Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and EGFR-TKI combination treatments have become the standard first-line treatments for EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. However, the best option has yet to be determined. This study compares the efficacy and safety of various first-line EGFR-TKI monotherapies and combination treatments for advanced EGFR-mutated NSCLC.

Impact of Rural School-Based Health Centers on Asthma Management.

J Pediatr

November 2024

Department of Pediatrics, Bassett Healthcare Network, Cooperstown, NY.

Objective: To test the hypothesis that students with asthma who have access to school-based health centers (SBHCs) receive more recommended preventive care and use less emergency care, we compared patterns of health care utilization among rural students with asthma by SBHC access.

Study Design: Using a cross-sectional design, we analyzed encounters for all patients ages 4 through 19 living in 4 counties covered by a health care system that sponsors a network of SBHCs in rural upstate New York. Patient addresses for each encounter were geocoded to school districts, allowing us to determine whether students lived in districts with (n = 15) or without (n = 23) a SBHC.

New Sulfurated Butyrolactones from the Fungus Penicillium janthinellum.

Chem Biodivers

September 2024

MOE Key Laboratory of Marine Drugs and Key Laboratory of Evolution and Marine Biodiversity, School of Medi cine and Pharmacy, Ocean University of China, Qingdao, 266003, People's Republic of China.

Deep-sea derived fungi are considered as significant resources to discovery structurally diverse and biologically active natural compounds. In this study, four new sulfurated butyrolactones, penijanthiones A-D (1-4), together with four known analogues (5-8), were isolated from a Mariana Trench-derived fungus Penicillium janthinellum SH0301. Compounds 1-4 were the undescribed examples for natural butyrolactones coupling with a mercaptolactate moiety.

Article Synopsis
  • - Salinimicrobium sp. 3283s is a newly discovered bacterium from the South China Sea that thrives in deep-sea sediment (1751 m deep) and produces a distinctive golden-yellow pigment.
  • - The complete genome of strain 3283s contains a single circular chromosome of 3,702,683 base pairs with 3,257 protein-coding genes, indicating significant genetic potential for adaptation to extreme deep-sea conditions.
  • - Experimental evidence shows that strain 3283s can grow well under high hydrostatic pressures (30 MPa and 60 MPa), with many identified genes that enhance its ability to survive in low-oxygen and high-pressure environments characteristic of deep sea habitats.

Background: Several antifungal agents are available for primary therapy in patients with invasive aspergillosis (IA). Although a few studies have compared the effectiveness of different antifungal agents in treating IA, there has yet to be a definitive agreement on the best choice. Herein, we perform a network meta-analysis comparing the efficacy of different antifungal agents in IA.
