The emission spectra of the lanthanide chelates enable them to act as a donor for several acceptors emitting at different wavelengths. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer between terbium(III) chelate labeled antibody Fab fragment (donor) and a 17beta-estradiol conjugated to Alexa Fluor 488, 555, 594 or 680 (acceptor) was employed to study the functionality of the terbium(III) chelate as an efficient donor for several acceptors emitting from green to far-red. During measurement, the sensitized emission of the acceptor was measured at acceptor specific wavelength. All the tested dyes proved to be efficient acceptors, and they were successfully used in the competitive homogeneous E2 assay. The highest signal to background ratio and the best assay performance was obtained with Alexa Fluor 680, due to the very low donor emission background at the far-red area. In addition, the sensitized emission of both Alexa Fluor 488 and 680 could be measured simultaneously without significant cross talk.

Herein we present a series of luminescent Tb(III)-probes ([Tb-Ltrp], [Tb-Ltyr], and [Tb-Lphe]) for sensing and discriminating purine nucleoside polyphosphates (NPP) based on a modified DTTA chelator appended to aromatic amino acids (Laa). The optically most effective luminescent [Tb-Ltrp] probe preferentially discriminates the guanine-NPPs over the adenine-NPPs PeT-based modulation of Tb(III) luminescence within the biological concentration range.

A three-dimensional terbium(III) coordination polymer of formula [Tb(bttb)(2,5-pzdc)] (1) [Hbttb = 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4'-carboxyphenyl)benzene and H-2,5-pzdc = 2,5-pyrazinedicarboxylic acid] was obtained under hydrothermal conditions. The bttb tetraanion in 1 adopts the bridging and chelating-bridging pseudo-oxo coordination modes while the 2,5-pzdc dianion exhibits a rather unusual bis-bidentate bridging pseudo-oxo coordination mode, both ligands being responsible for the stiffness of the resulting 3D structure. Solid-state photoluminescent measurements illustrate that 1 exhibits remarkable green luminescence emission, the most intense band occurring in the region of 550 nm (D → F) with lifetimes at the millisecond scale.

A novel multicolor fluorescent nano-probe based on the hybridization of Tb ion with gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) was synthesized to monitor and on-site visual assay of 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA), a biomarker of bacterial spores. DPA can replace the water molecule in the center of Tb and strongly coordinate with Tb based on the analyte-triggered antenna effect. Simultaneously, the red fluorescence of Au NCs is not influenced after addition of DPA and can be used as steady inside fluorescence reference channel to measure background noise.

Two series of highly luminescent yttrium(iii), europium(iii) and terbium(iii) metal-organic frameworks containing diimine aromatic ligands and the dicarboxylate linker trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate (chdc) which can be described by the general formulas [M(bpy)(chdc)], where M = Y (1), Eu (2), and Tb (3) and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridyl, and [M(phen)(chdc)], where M = Y (4), Eu (5), and Tb (6) and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, were synthesized and characterized. All compounds are based on the same dinuclear {M(L)(OOCR)} building blocks and possess a similar topology of the 3D framework with narrow pores. The chelate aromatic ligands act as efficient light-harvesting antennas for subsequent energy transfer to the emitting metal center (M = Eu, Tb) or intraligand photoemission (M = Y).
