Massive bleeding and bacterial infection of wounds may be life-threatening or even lead to death. Nowadays, gelatin-based hemostatic sponges have been widely used, but gelatin is not antibacterial and has poor structural stability. In this study, we mixed an antibacterial polypeptide, ε-poly-L-lysine (EPL), into gelatin.

Multicellular surface-attached populations of bacteria embedded in the extracellular matrix are known as biofilms. Bacteria generally preferred to grow as biofilms. Quorum sensing (QS), detection of density of cell population through gene regulation, has been found to play an important role in the production of biofilms.

The Hendra virus (HeV) has resulted in epidemics of respiratory and neurological illnesses in animals. Humans have contracted diseases with high fatality rates as a result of infected domestic animals, but effective vaccinations and therapies are currently not available against HeV. Herein, we analyzed the proteome of HeV and constructed an effective and innovative multi-epitope vaccine using immunoinformatics techniques.

Metabolic variation across pathogenic bacterial strains can impact their susceptibility to antibiotics and promote the evolution of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). However, little is known about how metabolic mutations influence metabolism and which pathways contribute to antibiotic susceptibility. Here, we measured the antibiotic susceptibility of 15,120 Escherichia coli mutants, each with a single amino acid change in one of 346 essential proteins.

Despite advances in medicine and antimicrobial research, viral infections continue to pose a major threat to human health. While major strides have been made in generating vaccines and small molecules to combat emerging pathogens, new modalities of treatment are warranted in diseases where there is a lack of treatment options, or where treatment cannot fully eradicate pathogens, as in HIV infection. Cellular therapies, some of which are FDA approved for treating cancer, take advantage of our developing understanding of the immune system, and harness this knowledge to enhance, or direct, immune responses toward infectious agents.
