Unlabelled: Sircah is a flexible tool for the detection, analysis and visualization of alternative transcripts. It takes as input gene models or spliced alignments and creates a database of alternative transcription events: alternative transcription initiation and polyadenylation, alternative 3' and 5' splice-site usage, skipped exons and retained introns. The results can be visualized in a variety of ways, allowing the creation of publication quality images.
Availability: The Sircah is available for download under a creative commons license along with additional documentation and a tutorial from http://www.bork.embl.de/Sircah.

In modern knee arthroplasty, surgeons increasingly aim for individualised implant selection based on data-driven decisions to improve patient satisfaction rates. The identification of an implant design that optimally fits to a patient's native kinematic patterns and functional requirements could provide a basis towards subject-specific phenotyping. The goal of this study was to achieve a first step towards identifying easily accessible and intuitive features that allow for discrimination between implant designs based on kinematic data.

Cervical cancer remains a major global health concern, with a specially alarming incidence in younger women. Traditional detection techniques such as the Pap smear and colposcopy often lack sensitivity and specificity and are highly dependent on the experience of the gynaecologist. In response, this study proposes the use of Hyperspectral Imaging, a pioneering technology that combines traditional imaging with spectroscopy to provide detailed spatial and spectral information.

Background: The detection of a local per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pollution hotspot in Zwijndrecht (Belgium) necessitated immediate action to address health concerns of the local community. Several human biomonitoring (HBM) studies were initiated, gathering cross-sectional exposure data from more than 10,000 participants. The linkage of these HBM data with primary care health registries might be a useful new tool in environmental health analysis.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a rapidly evolving in-situ multi-element analysis technique that has significantly advanced the field of liquid analysis. This study employs a femtosecond laser for quantitative analysis of heavy metals in flowing liquids, exploring its detection sensitivity and accuracy. Femtosecond pulsed laser excitation of water in a dynamic environment generates plasma while effectively preventing liquid splashing.

Biodegradable plastics, primarily aliphatic polyesters, degrade to varying extents in different environments. However, the absence of easily implementable techniques for screening microbial biodegradation potential -coupled with the limitations of non-functional omics analyses- has restricted comparative studies across diverse polymer types and ecosystems. In this study, we optimized a novel airbrushing method that facilitates functional analyses by simplifying the preparation of polyester-coated plates for biodegradation screening.
