An adaptive critic design (ACD)-based damping controller is developed for a thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) installed in a power system with multiple poorly damped interarea modes. The performance of this ACD computational intelligence-based method is compared with two classical techniques, which are observer-based state-feedback (SF) control and linear matrix inequality LMI-H(infinity) robust control. Remote measurements are used as feedback signals to the wide-area damping controller for modulating the compensation of the TCSC. The classical methods use a linearized model of the system whereas the ACD method is purely measurement-based, leading to a nonlinear controller with fixed parameters. A comparative analysis of the controllers' performances is carried out under different disturbance scenarios. The ACD-based design has shown promising performance with very little knowledge of the system compared to classical model-based controllers. This paper also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of ACDs, SF, and LMI-H(infinity).

Background: Emerging evidence indicates that arterial stiffening is associated with aging and cognitive impairment. Arterial stiffness is typically assessed by measuring pulse wave velocity (PWV) between carotid and femoral arteries. A recent study has introduced a fast oblique-sagittal PC-MRI (OS PC-MRI) technique that allows for simultaneously quantifying carotid PWV (cPWV) and CCA-ICA damping factor (cDF) within 2 minutes.

Objective: A novel approach to 3-dimensional morphometry of the thoracic aorta was developed by applying centerline analysis based on least-squares plane fitting, and a preliminary study was conducted using computed tomography imaging data.

Methods: We retrospectively compared 3 groups of patients (16 controls without aortic disease, and 16 cases each with acute type B aortic dissection and congenital bicuspid aortic valve). In addition to the standard assessment indices for curvature κ and torsion τ, we conducted coordinate transformation based on the least-squares plane, divided the centerline into 3 representative features (transverse, anterior-posterior, and longitudinal displacements), and analyzed the overall and local displacement in each direction.

Understanding plasmon damping in gold nanorods (AuNRs) is crucial for optimizing their use in photochemical processes and biosensing. This study used dark-field microscopy and spectroscopy to explore plasmon damping in single AuNRs on graphene monolayers (AuNR@GL) with pyridine derivatives as adsorbates. The Au-graphene heterostructure caused a Fermi-level downshift, making graphene a dominant electron acceptor.

Controllable synthesis of Pd and Pt shells on Au nanoparticles with electrodeposition.

Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge, 27 Charles Babbage Road, Cambridge, CB3 0FS, UK.

Shells of Pd and Pt were synthesized on Au nanoparticles by electrodeposition, leading to controllable size and optical properties. This approach yielded core-shell structures with good homogeneity in size after the optimization of electrochemical parameters such as deposition current and charge transfer, as well as nanoparticle surface treatment. Dark field scattering microscopy and spectroscopy were used to track changes in the optical response of individual particles during deposition.

Layered Composites for High Tan Delta Plateau over Wide Temperature Range.

Tan Delta reflects the viscoelastic behavior of materials, particularly polymers. In most cases, a high Tan Delta value is associated with transitions (such as glass transition or melting), enabling effective damping properties near these temperature ranges. However, achieving a high Tan Delta over a broad temperature range is challenging, particularly for engineering applications that involve significant temperature fluctuations.
