Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate changes in interocclusal distance (IOD) during pronunciation of /m/ and /s/ sounds in Brazilian Portuguese, in patients presenting dental wear due to bruxism, before and after placement of a stabilization appliance and restorative treatment.

Methods: Subjects were divided into a control group of 19 patients with no dental wear and an experimental group of 18 patients presenting dental wear on anterior teeth due to bruxism. A stabilization appliance was placed in each patient in the experimental group and anterior teeth were restored. A magnetic jaw-tracking device measured the interocclusal distance during pronunciation of /m/ and /s/ phonemes. Interocclusal distance for the experimental group was evaluated one week before and again immediately before the appliance was inserted and 24 hours, 7 days, 1 month and 2 months after appliance insertion. The same evaluation was performed 7 days and 1 month after restorative treatment. In the control group, the measurements were carried out at the same intervals.

Results: Comparison between groups revealed a significant difference (P<0.05) in interocclusal distance for the /m/ sound at all evaluation intervals. No differences were found before and after appliance insertion and restorative treatment with either phoneme.

Conclusion: Stabilization appliance therapy and restorative treatment of subjects with dental wear did not change the interocclusal distance during speech of /m/ and /s/ sounds in the Brazilian Portuguese language, however, when compared with normal subjects, the IOD values were higher for the dental wear group during pronunciation of the /m/ sound.

Interocclusal records (IORs) created with bite registration materials (BRMs) accurately reflect the opposing teeth's physiological and anatomical associations in digital and traditional dentistry. This study assessed the linear dimensional accuracy of vinyl polysiloxane-based scannable and transparent BRMs over obligatory clinical time intervals (1, 24, 72, and 168 h/s). A total of 3 scannable [Flexitime Bite, Occlufast CAD, Virtual CADBite] and 3 transparent [Maxill Bite, Charmflex Bite, Defend ClearBite] VPS-based BRMs were divided into 28 subgroups by time interval: 1, 24, 72, and 168 h/s.

Aims: The aim of this study is to identify methods for the digital analysis of the closest speaking space in dentates and to assess certain particularities using digital analysis.

Method: For the adult patients included in this study, traditional dental casts were fabricated, and interocclusal registrations of the maximal intercuspal position and of the closest speaking space were taken using polyvinyl siloxane. Dental casts in both positions were scanned using a dental laboratory scanner, and digital analysis was conducted using the 3Shape 3D Viewer.

Article Synopsis
  • * Methods: Fifty-six crown preparations on stone casts were scanned to measure their distances to opposing teeth, focusing on interocclusal clearance and comparing metrics using statistical analysis.
  • * Results: The findings showed that over 47% of the crown preparations lacked proper occlusal clearance, with functional cusps being more frequently under-reduced, highlighting the need for improved quality control in dental education.

Article Synopsis
  • Digital technology in dentistry, particularly the use of intraoral scanners (IOSs), has improved the process of acquiring occlusal records, highlighting the importance of static virtual articulation in this digital workflow.
  • A literature review of 30 relevant studies revealed three primary evaluation methods for accuracy: distance measurement, occlusal contact analysis, and deviation analysis; however, direct comparisons across studies are complicated due to differing methodologies.
  • Factors impacting the accuracy of virtual interocclusal records, such as scan range and positioning of records, remain uncertain and vary based on specific conditions, suggesting that using multiple evaluation methods could lead to a more comprehensive understanding of accuracy.
