Background/aim: Hyperthermia (HT), combined with chemotherapy, has been used to treat various types of cancer. This study aimed to investigate the HT-sensitivity of malignant and non-malignant cells, and then evaluate the combination effect of docetaxel (DTX) and a newly synthesized chromone derivative (compound A) with HT.

Materials And Methods: The number of viable cells was determined using the MTT method.

Cancer is still one of the world's deadliest health concerns. As per latest statistics, lung, breast, liver, prostate, and cervical cancers are reported topmost worldwide. Although chemotherapy is most widely used methodology to treat cancer, poor pharmacokinetic parameters of anticancer drugs render them less effective.

Establishment of Tumor Treating Fields Combined With Mild Hyperthermia as Novel Supporting Therapy for Pancreatic Cancer.

Front Oncol

November 2021

Molecular OncoSurgery, Section Surgical Research, Department of General, Visceral and Transplantation Surgery, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly malignant tumor with poor prognosis and limited therapeutic options. Alternating electrical fields with low intensity called "Tumor Treating Fields" (TTFields) are a new, non-invasive approach with almost no side effects and phase 3 trials are ongoing in advanced PDAC. We evaluated TTFields in combination with mild hyperthermia.

Theranostic two-dimensional superparamagnetic maghemite quantum structures for ROS-mediated cancer therapy.

J Mater Chem B

July 2021

Institute for Superconducting & Electronics Materials (ISEM), University of Wollongong (UOW), Wollongong, NSW 2522, Australia. and Illawara Health & Medical Research Institute (IHMRI), Wollongong, NSW 2522, Australia.

In this work, size- and shape-controlled two-dimensional (2D) superparamagnetic maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) quantum flakes (MQFs) with high surface area and mesoporosity were prepared by facile hydrothermal synthesis for biological applications. These quantum flakes exhibited superparamagnetic behaviours over a wide temperature range of 75-950 K with high saturation magnetization of Ms - 23 emu g-1 and a lower coercivity of Hc - 6.1 Oe.

HSP27 role in cardioprotection by modulating chemotherapeutic doxorubicin-induced cell death.

J Mol Med (Berl)

June 2021

Department of Food Science and Biotechnology, Sejong University, 209 Neungdong-ro, Seoul, 05006, South Korea.

The common phenomenon expected from any anti-cancer drug in use is to kill the cancer cells without any side effects to non-malignant cells. Doxorubicin is an anthracycline derivative anti-cancer drug active over different types of cancers with anti-cancer activity but attributed to unintended cytotoxicity and genotoxicity triggering mitogenic signals inducing apoptosis. Administration of doxorubicin tends to both acute and chronic toxicity resulting in cardiomyopathy (left ventricular dysfunction) and congestive heart failure (CHF).
