Endocytobionts (ECBs) were detected in the ovaries of Dermacentor reticulatus. Their developmental cycle is directly related to the developmental stages of tick oocytes. Two basic forms of ECBs occur in tick cells, i.e. dense forms, occurring singly or in aggregates situated free in the cytoplasm of host cells, and the light forms which are larger, pleomorphic and always situated inside vacuoles of host cells. The light forms occur together with dense forms in all oocytes. The dense forms occur freely and independently in funicular cells of the oocyte, the epithelial cells of oviducts, and additionally in the cells of the Malpighian tubules. A probable function of ECBs in the tick host is discussed.

Decades after their initial observation in prion-infected brain tissues, the identities of virus-like dense particles, varicose tubules, and oval bodies containing parallel bands and fibrils have remained elusive. Our recent work revealed that a phenotype of dilation of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), most notable for the perinuclear space (PNS), contributes to spongiform degeneration. To assess the significance of this phenotype for the etiology of prion diseases, we explored whether it can be functionally linked to other neuropathological hallmarks observed in these diseases, as this would indicate it to be a central event.

Here, we discover that the formation of spectral sidebands is always accompanying by the stabilized DPQS in the fiber laser, which is different from the conventional DS. Due to the combination of positive FOD and self-phase modulation, low- and high-frequency components are distributed at the leading and trailing edges of the pulse, forming the pedestals that propagate with it.

The permeability-selectivity trade-off in polymeric desalination membranes limits the efficiency and increases the costs of reverse osmosis and nanofiltration systems. Ultrathin contorted polyamide films with enhanced free volume demonstrate an impressive 8-fold increase in water permeance while maintaining equivalent salt rejection compared to conventional polyamide membranes made with -phenylenediamine and trimesoyl chloride monomers. The solution-based molecular layer-by-layer (mLbL) deposition technique employed for membrane fabrication sequentially reacts a shape-persistent contorted diamine monomer with a trimesoyl chloride monomer, forming highly cross-linked, dense polyamide networks while avoiding the kinetic and mass transfer limitations of traditional interfacial polymerization.

The negative effects associated with cyanobacterial blooms are of particular concern in protected ecosystems, as these areas are ecologically significant and attract a high number of visitors. This study aims to explore the cyanobacterial communities and associated toxicity in three reservoirs located within a Mediterranean National Park with a compromised situation at basin-level. Our results demonstrate the occurrence of dense toxic blooms containing microcystins (reaching values close to 280 μg L) and low levels of anatoxin-a and saxitoxins (up to 0.
