The oxo-bridged diiron(III) complex [{Fe(L-his)(dpq)}(2)(micro-O)](2+) having L-histidine (L-his) and dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq) bound to Fe(III) exemplifies an iron-based model photonuclease that shows visible light-induced DNA double-strand cleavage in a photodecarboxylation pathway and models iron-bleomycin activity.

Theoretical Investigation of the Atmospheric Photochemistry of Glyoxylic Acid in the Gas Phase.

The photochemistry of glyoxylic acid (HC(O)C(O)OH) is explored in the near UV in both the singlet (/) and triplet () manifolds using density functional theory (M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ) to reach an overall mechanistic picture of the atmospherically relevant photochemistry in the gas phase. The calculated energies and structures are also used in RRKM kinetics calculations to compare the relative reaction rates on each of these electronic states. The major photolysis pathways are two possible photodecarboxylation reactions: direct C-C bond cleavage (Norrish Type I reaction) and β-hydrogen transfer followed by CO loss.

The heterobimetallic R2lox protein binds both manganese and iron ions in a site-selective fashion and activates oxygen, ultimately performing C-H bond oxidation to generate a tyrosine-valine cross-link near the active site. In this work, we demonstrate that, following assembly, R2lox undergoes photoinduced changes to the active site geometry and metal coordination motif. Through spectroscopic, structural, and mass spectrometric characterization, the photoconverted species is found to consist of a tyrosinate-bound iron center following light-induced decarboxylation of a coordinating glutamate residue and cleavage of the tyrosine-valine cross-link.

Photoinduced Cross-Linking of Dynamic Poly(disulfide) Films via Thiol Oxidative Coupling.

Macromol Rapid Commun

January 2016

Institut Charles Sadron, University of Strasbourg, CNRS-UPR22, University of Strasbourg, 23 rue du Loess, BP, 84047, F-67034, Strasbourg Cedex 2, France.

Initially developed as an elastomer with an excellent record of barrier and chemical resistance properties, poly(disulfide) has experienced a revival linked to the dynamic nature of the S-S covalent bond. A novel photobase-catalyzed oxidative polymerization of multifunctional thiols to poly(disulfide) network is reported. Based solely on air oxidation, the single-step process is triggered by the photodecarboxylation of a xanthone acetic acid liberating a strong bicyclic guanidine base.

Spectroscopic studies on the photochemical decarboxylation mechanisms of synthetic pyrethroids.

Photochem Photobiol Sci

December 2012

Environmental Health Science Laboratory, Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd, Takarazuka, Hyogo, Japan.

A novel radical trapping technique combined with a fluorescence spectroscopic analysis has been employed to investigate the radical intermediates produced by photodecarboxylation of four synthetic pyrethroids: fenvalerate (SMD), fenpropathrin (DTL), cyphenothrin (GKL), and cypermethrin (AGT). Under photoirradiation at >290 nm, all pyrethroids underwent direct photolysis via homolytic cleavage of the carbon-oxygen bonds in the ester groups. The consumed amount of a nitroxide free radical, as a trapping agent for the intermediate radical of a pyrethroid, was determined by ESR, which was the measure of the reaction yield of a photochemically generated α-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl radical common to all pyrethroids.

The photochemistry of phthalimide derivatives of the electron-rich amino acids tyrosine, histidine and tryptophan 8-10 was studied with respect to photoinduced electron-transfer (PET) induced decarboxylation and Norrish II bond cleavage. Whereas exclusive photodecarboxylation of the tyrosine substrate 8 was observed, the histidine compound 9 resulted in a mixture of histamine and preferential Norrish cleavage. The tryptophan derivative 10 is photochemically inert and shows preferential decarboxylation only when induced by intermolecular PET.
