Experimental studies and analysis of acousto-optic diffraction in alpha-BaB(2)O(4) and Li(2)B(4)O(7) crystals are given. Ultrasonic wave velocity, elastic compliance and stiffness coefficients, and piezo-optic and photoelastic coefficients of alpha-BaB(2)O(4) and Li(2)B(4)O(7) crystals are determined. The acousto-optic figure of merit has been estimated for different possible geometries of acousto-optic interaction. It is shown that the acousto-optic figures of merit for alpha-BaB(2)O(4) crystals reach the value M(2)=(270 +/- 70) x 10(-15) s(3)/kg for the case of interaction with the slowest ultrasonic wave. The directions of propagation and polarization of those acoustic waves are obtained on the basis of construction of acoustic slowness surfaces. The acousto-optic diffraction is experimentally studied for alpha-BaB(2)O(4) and Li(2)B(4)O(7) crystals.

Nuclear energy is a competitive green energy, yet corrosion deposition and boron hideout on pressurized water reactor fuel cladding surfaces could cause localized corrosion and power shift, resulting in huge safety and economic risks. Alleviation of these problems requires the understanding of the corrosion deposition mechanism and related boron behavior. In this study, we explore corrosion product deposition in typical fuel assembly channels under subcooled boiling conditions and propose a boron hideout and return mechanism to explain the reason for the failure of the power reduction inhibiting a power shift.

The effective electromechanical properties and anisotropy factors of novel lead-free 1-3-type composites are studied to demonstrate their large piezoelectric anisotropy and considerable level of electromechanical coupling. The composites studied contain two single-crystal (SC) components and a polymer component. The first piezoactive component is a domain-engineered [001]-poled SC based on ferroelectric alkali niobates-tantalates, and this component is in the form of a system of long rods that are parallel to the poling axis .

Lithium tetraborate (Li2B4O7) pellets prepared by using water/solution assisted method were synthesized and characterized. Copper was used as doping material in order to enhance the Li2B4O7 thermoluminescent properties. For synthesis heating temperature parameters were defined at 750 °C for 2 hr, followed by 150 °C for another 2 hr.

The two heating rates method (originally developed for first-order glow peaks) was used for the first time to evaluate the activation energy (E) from glow peaks obeying mixed-order (MO) kinetics. The derived expression for E has an insignificant additional term (on the scale of a few meV) when compared with the first-order case. Hence, the original expression for E using the two heating rates method can be used with excellent accuracy in the case of MO glow peaks.
