The treatment for neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (NTOS) conventionally involves first-rib resection (FRR) surgery, which is quite challenging to perform, especially for novices, and is often associated with postoperative complications. Herein, we report a new segmental resection approach through piezo surgery that involves using a bone cutter, which can uniquely provide a soft tissue protective effect. This retrospective study involved the examination of 26 NTOS patients who underwent piezo surgery and another group of 30 patients who underwent FRR using the conventional technique.

The aim of this preliminary study is to histologically evaluate the effects of erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser on soft and hard tissues during implant bed preparation, in comparison with bur and cutter in order to observe the following aspects: (i) the shape of the cavity, (ii) the presence of debris, and (iii) structural modification of the cell architecture. Bone temperature changes during the preparation of the implant bed were also measured in order to evaluate thermal damage on soft and hard tissues. Er:YAG laser, Fotona X-Runner scanner and circular cutter of 5 mm diameter were compared using an in vitro model.

Ground Control Branch, NIOSH, Pittsburgh Mining Research Division, Pittsburgh, PA 15236, USA.

Room-and-pillar mining with pillar recovery has historically been associated with more than 25% of all ground fall fatalities in underground coal mines in the United States. The risk of ground falls during pillar recovery increases in multiple-seam mining conditions. The hazards associated with pillar recovery in multiple-seam mining include roof cutters, roof falls, rib rolls, coal outbursts, and floor heave.
