Di-2-ethylhexyl (DEHP) phthalate, one of the phthalates most widely distributed in our general environment, causes reproductive toxicity that is attributable to the action of its primary metabolite, mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP). Here, we have investigated the effects of MEHP on steroidogenesis by primary cultures of immature and adult rat Leydig cells. In both cases MEHP (250muM) was found to inhibit stimulation of androgen production evoked by human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This was associated with decreased expression of steroidogenic acute regulatory (StAR) protein and reduced transport of cholesterol into mitochondria but no detectable adverse effect on steroidogenic enzymes. Moreover, upon exposure to MEHP alone, 5alpha-reductase activity was decreased in immature, but not in adult Leydig cells. All together, our findings demonstrate that MEHP exerts suppressive effects on hCG-activated steroidogenesis in primary cultures of immature and adult rat Leydig cells and suppresses 5alpha-reductase activity in immature and not of adult rat cells. This may partly explain the anti-androgenic effects of DEHP in vivo and indicate a higher susceptibility in younger subjects.

Unlike the conventional, embodied, and embrained whole-body movements in the sagittal forward and vertical axes, movements in the lateral/transversal axis cannot be unequivocally grounded, embodied, or embrained. When considering motor imagery for left and right directions, it is assumed that participants have underdeveloped representations due to a lack of familiarity with moving along the lateral axis. In the current study, a 32 electroencephalography (EEG) system was used to identify the oscillatory neural signature linked with lateral axis motor imagery.

Growing teratoma syndrome (GTS) is characterized by a reduction in serum tumor markers despite the growth of a benign mature teratomatous mass following chemotherapy for germ cell tumors. Gliomatosis peritonei (GP) typically accompanies ovarian teratomas, marked by the dissemination of mature glial tissue across the peritoneum. The concurrent presence of GTS and GP after treatment for ovarian immature teratoma (IMT) is notably rare, with approximately 20 reported cases.

Neuronal structural plasticity gives the adult brain the capacity to adapt to internal or external factors by structural and molecular changes. These plastic processes seem to be mediated, among others, by the action of the neurotransmitter serotonin through specific receptors (5-HTRs). Previous studies have shown that the maturation of granule cells in the hippocampus is mediated by 5-HT3.

Background And Purpose: Congenital vertebral anomalies are commonly associated with underlying spinal cord anomaly which necessitates imaging both the spinal cord and the bony vertebral column to understand the extent of the deformity better. While MRI is the gold standard for spinal cord imaging, it does not provide CT-like bone details. Many MR bone imaging techniques have been tested in various adult spine conditions in the past decade but not much has been described on their reliability in pediatric spine.

Shoulder injuries, specifically proximal humeral fractures, are uncommon in skeletally immature patients. The anatomic characteristics of the humerus are determined by its ossification development, which is quite particular in the proximal segment where four principal segments have been outlined as fracture components in adults. Hereby, we present the case of an 18-year-old female who suffered a traffic accident that elicited a proximal humeral injury through the physeal line of the anatomical neck, as well as the treatment given and her clinical outcome with an effort to highlight the complexity of the diagnosis and management of this injury given the transitional bone age.
