To correlate CD 4 counts with albuminuria and glomerular lesions in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), we studied 104 HIV positive patients (68 males, 36 females) of whom 100 patients were infected by heterosexual contact, 3 by transfusion, and 1 by i.v. drug abuse. We screened over nine months for albuminuria by urine dip stick method, and performed renal biopsy on patients with albuminuria 2+ or more. Histological examination was accomplished by light microscopy in all and by electron microscopy when it was feasible. Albuminuria was observed in 29 (27%) patients, and it revealed a significant negative correlation with CD4 count (p<0.01). Patients with CD4 cells <350 cells/mm(3) disclosed a 3.5 fold increased risk of albuminuria as compared with patients with CD4 >350 cells/mm(3). There was no significant correlation between proteinuria and the duration of infection from the time of diagnosis. Albuminuria also demonstrated a significant negative correlation with the levels of hemoglobin (p<0.05). In addition, low numbers of CD4 cells were associated with lower levels of hemoglobin (p<0.001). Only 10 patients received renal biopsies, and the results revealed HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN) in 7 (70%) patients, chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis in 1, membranous glomerulopathy in 1, and diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis in 1. Acute renal failure was present in 5 patients, of whom four had a pre renal component and one had multiorgan dysfunction syndrome. We conclude that our study demonstrates that both proteinuria and HIVAN are common in HIV infected patients. Proteinuria has a negative correlation with the CD4 counts and hemoglobin levels.

Previous reports have indicated that during the era of combination antiretroviral therapy, the major causes of morbidity and mortality in people living with HIV (PLWH) were not solely linked to HIV-related opportunistic infections but also to cancers that were difficult to manage due to HIV-related immunodeficiency. We investigated whether PLWH who underwent autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ASCT) for lymphomas experienced significant morbidity over the past thirty years following HIV infection. We conducted a retrospective follow-up study of 49 PLWH over a 10-year period following ASCT.

Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly aggressive cancer with limited treatment options and a poor prognosis. The critical role of epigenetic alterations such as changes in DNA methylation, histones modifications, and chromatin remodeling, in pancreatic tumors progression is becoming increasingly recognized. Moreover, in PDAC these aberrant epigenetic mechanisms can also limit therapy efficacy.

This study analyzes the laboratory characteristics and prognosis of patients between PML-RARα negative APL and PML-RARα positive APL and compares the differences in order to improve the understanding of this rare APL and guide clinical diagnosis and treatment. A total of 81 patients with newly diagnosed APL based on bone marrow cell morphology were included, with 14 in the PML-RARα gene negative group and 67 in the PML-RARα gene positive group. The sex, age, peripheral blood routine test, coagulation related indicators, bone marrow cell morphology, flow cytometric immunophenotype, abnormal chromosome expression and prognosis of the 2 groups were analyzed and compared.

Background: Post-coronavirus disease 19 lung fibrosis (PCLF) shares common immunological abnormalities with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), characterized by an unbalanced cytokine profile being associated with the development of lung fibrosis. The aim of the present study was to analyze and compare the different subsets of CD4- and CD8-T cells, along with specific cytokine expression patterns, in peripheral blood (PB) from patients affected by PCLF and IPF and healthy controls (HCs).
Methods: One-hundred patients followed at the Rare Lung Disease Center of Siena University Hospital were enrolled.

Background: The characteristics of tumor immune microenvironment are important factors affecting the efficacy of immunotherapy, and there are differences in the distribution of tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) subsets in different types of tumors. This study aims to compare the distributions of cluster of differentiation (CD) 4+ and CD4+ T cell subsets of TILs and their clinical significance between lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC).
Methods: The tumor tissues of 78 LUAD and 56 LUSC patients who underwent surgery at The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University between October 2020 and October 2022 were collected, TIL level were detected by pathological observation, and the proportions of CD4+, CD4+ T cell subsets and CD4+/CD4+ ratio in TILs were detected by flow cytometry.
