Vitamin C plays a significant role in various physiological functions. Humans depend on external sources of vitamin C due to the loss of the L-gulono-γ-lactone oxidase (GULO) gene that contributes to the synthesis of vitamin C. During the evolutionary loss of the GULO gene, physical, chemical, and biological factors were different from the present environmental settings.

Article Synopsis
  • Bacterial defense systems are evolving to protect against mobile genetic elements (MGEs), but their distribution in engineered systems like membrane bioreactors is not well understood.
  • In this study, researchers found that bacterial defense systems in activated sludge flocs and membrane-attached biofilms showed similar patterns, influenced by genome size and bacterial type, particularly under stress.
  • Additionally, while most defenses were similar between bacteria and their associated MGEs, a significant portion of viral elements carried unique defense systems that may enhance bacteria's ability to adapt to environmental challenges, especially regarding biotic defense and antibiotic resistance.

The present frontrunners in the chemotherapy of infections caused by protozoa are nitro-based prodrugs that are selectively activated by PFOR-mediated redox reactions. This study seeks to analyze the distribution of PFOR in selected protozoa and bacteria by applying comparative genomics to test the hypothesis that PFOR in eukaryotes was acquired through horizontal gene transfer (HGT) from bacteria. Furthermore, to identify other putatively acquired genes, proteome-wide and gene enrichment analyses were used.

Neuroparasitism concerns the hostile take-over of a host's nervous system by a foreign invader, in order to alter the behaviour of the host in favour of the parasite. One of the most remarkable cases of parasite-induced host behavioural manipulation comprises the changes baculoviruses induce in their caterpillar hosts. Baculoviruses may manipulate caterpillar behaviour in two ways: hyperactivity (increased movement in the horizontal plane) and/or tree-top disease (movement to elevated levels in the vertical plane).

This 20-year prospective study examined verbal aggression and intense conflict within the family of origin and between adolescents and their close friends as predictors of future verbal aggression in adult romantic relationships. A diverse community sample of 154 individuals was assessed repeatedly from age 13 to 34 years using self-, parent, peer, and romantic partner reports. As hypothesized, verbal aggression in adult romantic relationships was best predicted by both paternal verbal aggression toward mothers and by intense conflict within adolescent close friendships, with each factor contributing unique variance to explaining adult romantic verbal aggression.
