Objective: Despite even occasional smoking being more risky for adolescents with asthma, the smoking rate in this vulnerable population remains high. This is the first longitudinal study investigating asthma-specific predictors of smoking initiation.
Methods: A three-wave longitudinal survey study (22 months) among 257 adolescents with asthma was conducted. The effects of asthma-specific factors [symptom severity, medication adherence, coping, attitude towards asthma, and quality of life (QOL)] on smoking onset were tested with logistic regression models.
Results: Poorer self-reported adherence and the maladaptive coping strategy of hiding asthma predicted smoking onset. Poorer QOL predicted smoking in boys only.
Conclusions: Our findings underscore the importance of recognizing and addressing adherence problems during adolescence as low adherence is a risk factor for smoking initiation. Moreover, psychosocial factors, such as coping and QOL for boys, were associated with smoking initiation. This highlights the importance of attending to the psychosocial needs of youth with asthma.

This study evaluates the influence of smoking cessation policies and COVID-19 on the prevalence of smoking among Korean adolescents from 2011 to 2020. Based on the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, trends in adolescent smoking behaviors were examined, including the impact of cigarette price increases, Pictorial Warning Labels (PWLs), and the onset of COVID-19. We used joinpoint regression analysis to discern annual changes in the prevalence of adolescent smokers.

Background: Results of recent analyses indicate that axon demyelination may play an important role in AD pathology. The MBP gene encodes a myelin basic protein involved in axon myelination in the nervous system including the central nervous system. Polymorphisms in this gene, as well as variations in expression, have been associated with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Objective: To confirm the incidence of subcutaneous effusion secondary to cerebrospinal fluid leakage after craniotomy, analyze the risk factors for cerebrospinal fluid leakage leading to subcutaneous effusion, summarize the underlying causes of its occurrence and explore the corresponding treatment strategies.
Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 757 patients who underwent craniotomy at our hospital from January to December 2023. The authors documented the sex, age, surgical characteristics, and history of chronic diseases for all patients, including those who developed subcutaneous effusion secondary to cerebrospinal fluid leakage.
Background: Biomarkers that predict the heterogenous nature and late onset of cognitive decline are needed to evaluate geroscience interventions designed to delay or prevent the progression of Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias (ADRD). The DunedinPACE epigenetic clock is designed to measure pace of biological aging, and is therefore a promising candidate biomarker. Here we (1) investigate if DunedinPACE is associated with cognitive aging, and (2) the extent to which these associations are independent of education.

Background: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild behavioral impairment (MBI) identify older persons that are more likely to be at preclinical stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) than those without SCD and MBI. However, vascular co-pathologies may also contribute to new onset and persistent cognitive and behavioral symptoms. We investigated vascular risk factor associations with SCD and MBI in older persons without mild cognitive impairment or dementia.
