Previous studies have shown beneficial effects of empagliflozin (Empa), a selective inhibitor of the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), on diabetes and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with diabetes. However, whether Empa could ameliorate diabetes mellitus (DM)-induced male spermatogenesis dysfunction remains unclear. Our study aimed to investigate the effect of Empa in the development of DM-induced male spermatogenesis dysfunction and to reveal the molecular mechanisms.

The involvement of circulating miR-146a and miR-27a in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Clin Cardiol

June 2024

Department of Laboratory Medicine, The Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University, Sichuan Province Engineering Technology Research Center of Molecular Diagnosis of Clinical Diseases, Molecular Diagnosis of Clinical Diseases Key Laboratory of Luzhou, Luzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study hypothesizes that specific circulating miRNAs (miR-146a and miR-27a) play roles in the interactions between ASCVD and SARS-CoV-2 infections.
  • * Findings showed that ASCVD patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 had lower miR-146a and higher miR-27a levels, especially in those with other conditions like diabetes, indicating these miRNAs are linked to lipid/glucose levels, inflammation, and immune responses in these

ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in young adults is a rare occurrence that requires a thorough investigation to determine the underlying cause. Herein, a young female patient presented with dull retrosternal chest pain associated with nausea and left arm numbness. Cardiac-specific troponin was elevated and the electrocardiogram revealed ST-segment elevation in the inferior wall leads indicative of myocardial infarction.

Mechanisms of trastuzumab induced cardiotoxicity - is exercise a potential treatment?

Cardiooncology

April 2023

Department of Pharmacology, University of Oxford, Mansfield Road, Oxford, OX1 3QT, UK.

The use of the adjuvant therapeutic antibody trastuzumab in breast cancer is associated with a range of cardiotoxic side effects despite successfully reducing the severity of outcomes cancer patients,. The most common cardiac effect, a reduction in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), is a known precursor to heart failure and often requires interruption of chemotherapy to avoid endangering patients further. An understanding of trastuzumab's cardiac-specific interactions is therefore critical in devising new methods to not only avoid permanent cardiac damage, but also prolong treatment time, and therefore effectiveness, for breast cancer patients.

Objective: To evaluate the safety of the combination of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin and docetaxel in neoadjuvant therapy for breast cancer (BC) with axillary lymph nodes metastasis.

Methods: In this single-arm study, 91 patients with clinical stage IIA-IIIc BC received 6 cycles of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin plus docetaxel as neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). Trastuzumab was allowed in patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive tumors.
