The reactions of chiral benzyl carbocations bearing alpha-phenyl substituents with N-sulfonylated indoles afford 1,1,2-triarylalkanes with anti-selectivities. This outcome is a reversal of facial diastereoselectivity relative to Bach's alpha-alkyl-bearing benzyl cations. The reactions are promoted by either a Brønsted acid (TFA) or Lewis acid (BF3.OEt2), offering differential diastereoselectivities and reactivities. The electronic properties of both reacting partners strongly influence the reaction rates and the product diastereoselectivities and appear to operate under kinetic control. This chemistry provides an efficient access to sterically congested tetrasubstituted ethanes.

A highly stereoselective Brønsted-acid catalyzed synthesis of densely substituted spiroisoindolinones from enamides and 3-hydroxy-isoindolinones is described. With simple Brønsted-acids, such as para-toluene sulfonic acid, spiroisoindolinones with three contiguous stereogenic centers are formed in high yields (up to 97 %) and diastereoselectivities (up to >98 : <2 : 0 : 0 dr) under mild reaction conditions. With the use of a chiral phosphoric acid catalyst, a diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis of the corresponding spiroisoindolinones was achieved.

We present here a new method for the synthesis of 2-substituted-3-aryl benzoheterocycles through a more challenging constrained [1,5]-type Friedel-Crafts reaction/rearrangement and aromatization process. By using the readily available 2-aryoxy-1,3-indandiones and 2-arylamino-1,3-indandiones, a range of 2-substituted-3-aryl benzofurans and indoles were prepared in good to excellent yields (yields up to 86%) under the catalysis of CFSOH or Sm(OTf). Compared with previous methods for constructing similar structures, this approach offers several advantages, including the use of easily accessible starting materials, mild reaction conditions, high yield, excellent regio- and diastereoselectivity, and a broad substrate scope.

Gridization is an emerging molecular integration technology that enables the creation of multifunctional organic semiconductors through precise linkages. While Friedel-Crafts gridization of fluorenols is potent, direct linkage among fluorene molecules poses a challenge. Herein, we report an achiral Pd-PPh-cataylized diastereoselective (>99:1 d.

A catalytic diastereoselective Prins reaction for hydroxymethylation and hydroxylation of 1,3-diarylpropene was successfully utilized to prepare various 1,3-dioxanes 7 in 14-88% yields. Take advantage of the synthetic intermediate 7h, the key B/C rings in brazilin core could be constructed by the sequential of Friedel-Crafts/Ullmann-Ma rather than Ullmann-Ma/Friedel-Crafts reactions.

The asymmetric desymmetrizing [3+2] annulation reaction of -quinamines and arylalkylketenes to synthesize hydroindoles was realized. Catalyzed by chiral bisguanidinium hemisalt via multiple hydrogen bond interactions, enantiomerically enriched products with reversal of diastereoselectivity in comparison with the racemic version were afforded in good yields under mild reaction conditions. Diaryl-substituted hydroindoles could also perform the Friedel-Crafts type of addition to give more complicated multicycles.
