The pfam04002 annotation describes RadC as a bacterial DNA repair protein. Although the radC gene is expressed specifically during competence for genetic transformation in Streptococcus pneumoniae, we report that radC mutants exhibit normal uptake and processing of transforming DNA. They also display normal sensitivity to DNA-damaging agents, providing no support for the rad epithet.

In this paper, a fiber optic sensor with draw-tower-grating (DTG)-based Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) are proposed to measure the temperature and salinity of seawater simultaneously. The sensing structure utilizes DTG as the reflector, and two adjacent gratings can be cascaded to compose an FPI. By employing moisture-sensitive materials to the surface of the optical fiber, the variation in salinity can be measured by the axial strain applied by the coating on the sensing optical fiber.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to determine how effective histogram analysis of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps is in distinguishing between low-grade and high-grade brainstem gliomas (BSGs).
  • It involved 28 patients and measured various ADC histogram parameters using two different volume of interest (VOI) methods: one focusing on the entire tumor and the other on just the solid part of the tumor.
  • Findings indicated that the VOI method targeting the entire solid part provided better diagnostic value with higher sensitivity and specificity compared to the whole tumor method, highlighting ADC histogram analysis as a promising tool for distinguishing these tumor grades.

Role of diffusion-weighted imaging in the diagnosis of pituitary region tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effectiveness of Diffusion-Weighted Imaging (DWI) in improving the identification of sellar and parasellar tumors during routine pituitary MRI scans, recognizing a gap in current guidelines.
  • A retrospective analysis of 242 MRI scans revealed that invasive pituitary adenomas had significantly lower apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values compared to other tumor types, with specific cut-off points indicating high sensitivity and specificity for differentiation.
  • The findings suggest that incorporating DWI into standard MRI protocols can significantly enhance diagnostic accuracy for these tumors, with a quick scan time making it a practical addition to pituitary examinations.

Objectives: This paper describes the changes made to the collection of cognitive measures when the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) introduced remote modes of data collection.

Methods: In Round 4 (2021-2023), the longitudinal study transitioned from being conducted in-person to collecting data via multiple modes including in-person and remote modes: web, phone, and paper-and-pencil. The team began with the measures used in Rounds 2 and 3 of NSHAP-the survey-adapted Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-SA)-and evaluated which measures could be administered remotely, introducing new measures for each cognitive subdomain, as needed, to compensate for items that could not be administered remotely.
