An improved crystal design for a Bonse-Hart ultra-small-angle scattering instrument is presented. Defects at the diffracting surfaces of the conditioning crystals were found to be at the origin of diffuse scattering that enhances the intensity in the wings of the rocking curves by several orders of magnitude. In order to improve the performance of the instrument, the monolithic channel-cut crystals were replaced by pairs of separate polished and deeply etched crystals. These crystals were mounted on a mechanical stage that allows very precise parallel alignment of the crystals to within a tiny fraction of the rocking curve width (sub-microrad range). By using these double-crystal set-ups, the parasitic background scattering was reduced by more than an order of magnitude. The steps to achieve the optimum surface quality of the crystals as well as the precision mechanical design for their parallel alignment are described. Significant improvement of the signal-to-background ratio and the available wavevector range of the instrument make it suitable for studying the microstructure and dynamics of dilute and weakly scattering soft-matter systems. This development also has potential applications in X-ray optics such as low-background and tunable monochromators and collimators.

Purpose: Anterior tibial closing wedge osteotomy (ATCWO) has been shown to significantly reduce failure rates of revision anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions in patients with a posterior tibial slope (PTS) ≥12°. Recent findings suggest a slight but significant reduction of the medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) resulting in a varus knee where the sagittal osteotomy plane is based on a total of two guide wires defining the osteotomy wedge without respecting the frontal plane. We hypothesize that the placement of a total of four guide wires intraoperatively can reduce the influence on the MPTA.

This paper introduces a novel geometry-based synchrosqueezing S-transform (GSSST) for advanced gearbox fault diagnosis, designed to enhance diagnostic precision in both planetary and parallel gearboxes. Traditional time-frequency analysis (TFA) methods, such as the Synchrosqueezing S-transform (SSST), often face challenges in accurately representing fault-related features when significant mode closely spaced components are present. The proposed GSSST method overcomes these limitations by implementing an intuitive geometric reassignment framework, which reassigns time-frequency (TF) coefficients to maximize energy concentration, thereby allowing fault components to be distinctly isolated even under challenging conditions.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of attachment design on maxillary molar distalization and simultaneous expansion during distalization, and the influence of third molars on distalization in the clear aligner technique using the finite element method.
Methods: Six models were created to evaluate three different attachment designs on the second molars. Model I: employed a vertical rectangular attachment; Model II: used a vertical rectangular attachment with the presence of the third molar; Model III: used a combined semi-elliptical attachment; and Model IV: featured an opposed semi-elliptical attachment with buccal and palatal components.

This feature article reviews the synthesis, structural comparison, and physical properties of [2Fe-2S] model compounds, which serve as vital tools for understanding the structure and function of Fe-S clusters in biological systems. We explore various synthetic methods for constructing [2Fe-2S] cores, offering insights into their biomimetic relevance. A comprehensive analysis and comparison of Mössbauer spectroscopy data between model compounds and natural protein systems are provided, highlighting the structural and electronic parallels.

Plants commonly undergo leaf morphoanatomy and composition modifications to cope with drought stress, and these tend to reduce mesophyll conductance to CO2 diffusion (gm), a key limitation to photosynthesis. The cell wall appears to play a crucial role in this reduction, yet the specific effect of cell wall compositions on gm and the underlying regulatory mechanisms of cell wall thickness (Tcw) variation are not well understood. In this study, we subjected cotton plants to varying levels of water deficit to investigate the impact of leaf cell wall composition and the arrangement patterns of microfibrils within cell walls on Tcw and leaf gas exchange.
