Venom of the Australian ant species Myrmecia pilosula contains a number of allergenic peptides including pilosulins. To obtain novel cDNA clones that encode the pilosulin-related bioactive peptides, mRNA of M. pilosula species complex was subjected to RT-PCR in which the forward primer corresponds to a nucleotide sequence in the leader sequences of pilosulins. We isolated a cDNA clone encoding the novel bioactive peptide pilosulin 5. Tandem mass analysis was entirely consistent with the cDNA derived sequence, and indicated that pilosulin 5 is connected by a single disulfide bridge to create a dimmer peptide of 8546Da. Synthetic pilosulin 5 peptide caused a significant histamine release in a dose-dependent manner, and the mastoparan homologous region of pilosulin 5 was responsible for the activity.

For the first time in any animal, we show that nocturnal bull ants use the exceedingly dim polarisation pattern produced by the moon for overnight navigation. The sun or moon can provide directional information via their position; however, they can often be obstructed by clouds, canopy, or the horizon. Despite being hidden, these bodies can still provide compass information through the polarised light pattern they produce/reflect.

In Batesian mimicry, mimetic traits are not always as convincing as predicted by theory-in fact, inaccurate mimicry with only a superficial model resemblance is common and taxonomically widespread. The "selection trade-offs hypothesis" proposes a life-history trade-off between accurate mimetic traits and one or more vital biological functions. Here, using an accurate myrmecomorphic (ant-mimicking) jumping spider species, Myrmarachne smaragdina, we investigate how myrmecomorphic modifications to the body shape impact the internal anatomy in a way that could be functionally limiting.

This work presents a novel technique to improve oil pipeline monitoring capabilities, a vital activity in the oil and gas sector. Using Monte Carlo simulations, the work meticulously records data from a pipeline testing environment with various petroleum products and volume ratios. We apply the presented technique to mix four petroleum products-ethylene glycol, gasoline, crude oil, and gasoil-in different volumetric fractions to precisely determine their volume ratios.

The natural pollinator of the major species of commercially-grown vanilla, , is unknown, and the crop requires hand pollination to achieve significant levels of fruit set; however, the traditional technique (using a toothpick) is costly, as it requires skilled personnel. To overcome this problem, two native Australian bees, and , and the blowfly, , were trialled as pollinators. Three alternatives to the toothpick method were also trialled.
