A laboratory for measuring low-level radioactivity has been built at the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm. Low-level concrete in combination with a 5 cm iron lining provide an average photon fluency rate from terrestrial sources at least a factor of 40 below that in the common laboratories of the Center. The radon activity inside the laboratory has been measured to (3+/-2) Bq m(-3). Material considerations are discussed. Construction and performance of the laboratory, as well as the present instrumentation, is described.

Background: The direct and accurate measurement of low-level γ-emitters in samples from nuclear facilities is a challenging task due to the presence of high activities of dominant radionuclides. In this case a complex chemical separation is required to remove interfering radionuclides prior to γ-spectrometric analysis. Several radionuclides such as, Ag, Sb, Sn and Te are of relevance for radioanalytical analysis in nuclear facilities.

The concentration of natural radionuclides Ra, Th and K in ceramic tiles manufactured in Poland is presented in this paper. The concentration of natural radioactive isotopes in the tested samples was determined using a low-level digital gamma ray spectrometer equipped with an HPGe semiconductor detector. The mean concentrations of Ra, Th and K in the analyzed samples were found to be 48 ± 3 Bq∙kg, 49 ± 3 Bq∙kg and 476 ± 23 Bq∙kg, respectively.

Liquid low-level radioactive waste at the Savannah River Site contains several species of mercury, including inorganic, elemental, and methylmercury. This waste is solidified and stabilized in a cementitious waste form referred to as saltstone. Soluble mercury is stabilized as β-cinnabar, HgS as the result of reaction between the mercury and sulfur present in blast furnace slag, one of the cementitious reagents.
